It's really no more ethnocentric than asian nations that buy no products from the US and have a one way trade agreement. Indian companies cannot outsource their IT work to Pittsburgh...

Ponder this: China has been enforcing a 1 child policy for a solid generation now. Think about the problems facing the US as the baby boomers age, and now think of what happens when the parents of all the "1 children" are older. The Chinese economy is still developing and is largely rural and poor outside the coastal cities. They have not built up enough wealth (like our current SS surplus) to come close to supporting the looming generational crisis.
Add to that the fact that a totalitarian Communist regime can only last so long, as liberalizing an economy inevitably leads to political liberalization.
I would be more worried about India than China, and again so much of their economy is backwards and so much infrastructure needs to be developed outside the major cities that they are many decades away from anything close to a serious challenge to us outside of 1 or 2 specific areas.

The US does not want China to collapse, as China and Japan are the two biggest investors in the American Dollar. Without them, and the Saudi's, we'd be screwed.

China is heading down a very interesting road and stands to be the victim of its own success. On the one hand you have a terrific economy that is already an industrial power house. On the other hand, you have this vast pool of peasents out in the country side living at or near subsistance levels. And riding heard on it all is a very oppressive totalitarian government.
Where it gets neat is that industrial base is in existance because of the dirt cheap labor and appauling working conditions. So you basically have a buncha folks working to make things they could never hope to afford. While the factory owners get just fantastically wealthy off of it. For that economic gravy train to continue to run, they are going to have to keep those wages low and keep screwing the worker. But hey, you got a billion + chinese, so who cares if a bunch get messed up on the job. Also remember, that its this urban industrial society which is continuing to grow in power and politcal clout. You can see this by the economic liberalization going on that these guys are really starting to run the show, and so future policies are quite likely to continue to cater to them.
Then you got your whole peasent segment of society in the field which is vastly larger than the urban society, but even more dirt poor than your urbanite factory workers. Further, these guys keep breeding and God isn't making any more land, so arable land prices are going to keep climbing. Eventually you are going to be in a situation where the peasent farmer can no longer afford a farm. With a communist land system, this isn't that bad, as you are guaranteed to always have one, in theory. However, with the capitalist riding herd how long this lasts is in a real question because these guys are going to be wanting to buy land for new factories, estates, what have you.
Then, over all of it you got your basic totalitarian government which depends on keeping its people stupid to stay in power, lest they get an idea whats outside. This is why Kruschev had the Berlin wall built, because people weren't happy with the whole socialist utopia thing and kept fleeing to the west when they would learn just how much better over there it was. So they gotta keep their hands on the information flow lest the workers and the peasents get the idea that they are getting a pretty damn raw deal in all of it and decide to do something about it. You know...like they did under Mao back in the 30's & 40's. BUT! it gets better. While closing off the information to the backwoods peasents isn't that hard, you got your major political force pushing for MORE information and education, namely the capitalist. Because to compete economically they need skilled workers, and any Tom, d**k, or Han off the farm is gonna suck when it comes to running a remotely high tech auto plant machine because he's your basic illiterate peasent.
THEN just to make shit even more interesting, you got the fall out of the 1 child policy, easily available sonograms, and abortions leading to a massive gender mismatch to the tune of 1-3% of your TOTAL population, which is going to be much significantly higher of that generation. So you are gonna have a few million excess young men who aren't going to be happy that they will never get to have a wife because there just aren't enough of women to go around.
All this together and you got one serious f****d up situation coming in China. The peasents don't realize just how s****y a life they got because they have nothing to compare it too, but the need for more education to sustain the industrial growth will invariably show'em. The workers are getting screwed but can't do shit about it cause there is a monsterous glut on the labor market and the big shots got an uneasy alliance with the government who is actually in the business of keeping the population down, so they don't give a toss about worker saftey. Further, the rich guys are p****d off at the party bosses who want to keep tight reigns on it, but are able to buy'em off with some hefty bribes, err taxes, because they need more skilled dirty cheap labor to keep the economic juggernaut moving along.
I'm not sure i give it 20-30 years before it goes to hell in a handbasket, but when it goes, its gonna go spectacular I think and that isn't necessarily a good thing for the US. Unless of course the African's have finally gotten their shit together by then and we can start buying Nikes and Calvin Klien shit from them instead of the Chinese.
Oh, one last thing. China is a country with a very rich history of getting violent when they get p****d off. They did it during the Boxer Rebellion, the whole Communist revolution, the Korean War, the Great Leap Forward, etc... and they have a decided propensity to let it get bloody as hell when it does. Cause really...whats it matter if you kill off a buncha chinese to the chinese...there are a billion more where that came from.
