I was just wondering what everyone's job is and how much they make.

Really just trying to get some ideas now that I am going off to college as a Undecided major. I was going into the U.S. Air Force but was told I couldn't because of a irregular heartbeat.

I know a lot of people on here have pretty nice jobs because of all the cool shit they have. Uglar for example.

the longer your future is "undecided" the longer you'll flake out and become a nobody burnout.

and yes, you're on the path to become a burnout.

burnout from what?

If I plan on staying in the town I live in now that my family lives in I wont amount to much unless I open up my own business.

If I plan on leaving I'll end up going to college find a major and moving.

I have had 4 'careers' per se..

I worked at McDonalds for 3 years from age 14-17. Approx Salary: $4.75 n hour when I left in 1987.

I worked as a consultant for the Univeristy of Alaska while going to school there. 4 years... approx 11.20 an hour

I taught computer classes (10-15 people, 2-5 day seminar classes), similar to what CompUSA does. Approx Salary: $27,000

I was a Directional Wellplanner for Halliburton. I planned oil wells. Basically I used computer software to plan wellpaths from surface to geological targets.
Approx Salary: $110,000 year.... 12 hour days, weekends and on call 24/7

Now I am a Network Administrator for the State of Alaska. I am a tier 3 problem resolution specialist. In effect, I get the technical problems that are kicked up the ladder.... Approx Salary: $60,000 a year, 7.5 hours a day, 37.5 hours a week, I am also still a consultant for Halliburton at $125 an hour... 2-3 hours a week as duties are required.

There... now you know the history of teh Frashii

Quit High School at 16, went to college, liked Coke to much, out of College at 18.

I thought i was a big badassed "investor" back in 1995-1997 wheeling and dealing a whole 15,000-30,000, lost all my money and my first love due to utter stupidity.

Ultimate burnt out 1997-1999, left Atlanta, GA and moved out to California for the f**k of it and found out people actually paid big bucks for individuals who were very very familar with corporate firewalls

112,000 salary for a year working in Sunnyvale, California as a checkpoint firewall-1 administrator

Market crashed, Go Clinton! Lost job, started over career as a N.O.C. Tech for Cingular Wireless for 38,000 a year. (No experience, no knowledge of Wireless Networks). Friend helped me out, and hooked me up to pay 1900$ a month rent!

July 1st, 2001 - Back in business in Atlanta, GA to Corporate for Cingular Wireless. National Networks SS7 engineer - $55,000 with a new and improved 800$ rent!

February 28, 2004 - National Network Problem Resolution Team (nothing like handling 26,000,000 customer outages!). I sit on my ass, and when something very serious breaks, and no one else can figure it out - I get the absolute joy to fix it. $76,500 a year, but hourly so maybe this year i will finally get back into 6 figures.

This is the story of a completely mediocre subarbanite from Atlanta, Georgia.

The End.

Active Duty United States Military, Information Systems Technician 2nd class, currently stationed at Keflavik, Iceland.

Salary, well it's no big secret how much we make. I think my base pay is $1991 a month.

Left grad school partway through - got tired of not being able to afford stuff like a car and my own apartment, and it seemed that by the time I got my PhD in physics I'd be almost 30 and my life would be half over, lol.

Started working for software companies, bounced around quite a bit. Eventually moved into contract work because I was good at coming up to speed fast in new situations and I liked the autonomy and didn't like company politics, but ironically my contracts all lasted longer than any of my jobs ever did. For the last ten years or so was making $100-$120/hr, minimum 40 hrs/week, often 60-75 hrs/week. Typical contract was three years - only ever had a break once between contracts, for three weeks. That worked pretty well - missed one good opportunity where I'd have made big bucks (1-3 million probably) with options had I been an employee, but otherwise made out better.

Bottom kind of fell out of the contract market a year and a half ago with the recession, so I moved to a startup doing software for telecoms. Weird being an employee again, but it's with friends so that's cool. $125k/year which isn't bad for a startup, but hurts compared to contracting, and options which may or may not be worth something someday.

I'm not going to lie...

I am a contractor at Hewertt Packard. Though it sounds like a high paying job, it's really not. In reality, i just test servers and hard drives. I get paid 7.25. 3 days one weeks, 12 hour shifts and 4 days another week, same 12 hour shifts. Not bad money because i'll be going to college as well in august ... Actually, i can't wait to go to school Very Happy .

Right now, I'm living in South Florida, and working for FPL (Florida's main power company) promoting a new, renewable energy program. I get paid $10 an hour and $3 per sign up. It's a pretty nice job considering I get free admission to all local events so I can see a lot of music acts for free (Peter Frampton tonight!)

In August, I'm transferring to the School of Visual Arts in NYC to study film, so I don't know what I'll be doing after summer, in terms of a job.

Worked for McDonald's from 85 to 87 as a teen. Made like $3.25 or something lame like that an hour.

Joined the Navy in 87. Made no more than 20k a year by the time I got out in 97. Did tours in CincLant, Norfolk, Keflavik Iceland and a ship USS A.W. Radford.

Did Telemedicine for a company in Orlando. Made 30k. From 97 to 98.

In 98 I joined up with a local company working as the main Server Engineer and in charge of the helpdesk/2nd level support. Make about 75k a year, plus another 12k from the Navy as an IT1 reservist.

Currently a full time student at UM gettting a BBA in CIS, looking to do my MBA at Emory some time in the near future.

I also work part-time for a real estate developer doing accounting and financial analysis, get paid $55,000.00 a year for it.

On the side I do freelance accounting and computer programing work. I charge between $30-$125 depending on the level of complexity of the work. This nets me another $10,000-$15,000 a year.

Hmm...currently working as a tutor in a small community college, part-time, not making a lot of money at all Sad Job will be gone at the end of the semester (my grad assistanship stipend will be gone as well), so am job hunting...finding something in southern AR that pays well is like looking for a needle in a haystack tho Sad

I have one MS, am halfway through another, but am tired of school right now because I am essentially repeating most of my first MS--could only take off 9 credits. The upside is that I am doing a 60 credit MS for 30 credits (plus that 9), and have 15 credits of repeated classes already done.

So, what can I do? Must finish the MS to get licensed as a counselor in this state--that means, though, working f/t for three years, under supervision, for about 8.00 an hour. I cannot even dream of surviving on that.

So, I am looking elsewhere...but there aren't very many places to look. I have applied for a f/t faculty position, teaching intro to psych, abnormal, and developmental, but without any formal classroom teaching experience, I know I am not their ideal candidate, and while my application remains active, they are still looking Sad I have also applied to be a drug court counselor, but their application process is closing today, I think, so I should hear, either way, after the weekend.

I have money in the bank--quite a lot of it--but that is ALL I have after almost 24 years of marriage..and it's barely 1/3 of what NYS said I could have...I felt no compulsion to rake him over the coals...I lived a charmed life while married...but that money is locked up tight in longterm investments--it doesn't exist for me...

I work for New Edge Networks in their TAC (technical assistance center, essentially tech support for now). Just started here 2 weeks ago though. Make 40,000 a year. Just left a job where I was making 26,000 as a NOC tech.
