Oh man, I feel for ya. It isn't bad going through the surgery. You will be out cold or else not feel anything and be awake... kind of. Don't expect to eat anything for the next couple of days. Don't expect to smile, or sing. Hell right after the surgery expect to drool like you were 2 years of age. Oooo ooo it's bringing back memories. Expect to only have one needle used. Into either the arm or vien in the wrist opposite side of palm. I wouldn't say I have a controlling phobea of needles myself, but I just don't like the idea of foreign metal objects entering my flesh and entering my blood vessels. I overthink the process. Don't be suprised if while you are on the table or chair they decide they need to take out another "previously unseen" wizdom tooth. All the luck man.

All in all it isn't bad at all. You feel more afterwords.

I'll give you more info, but I'm late in spotting Des at the gym. That pansy weakling.

Yeah I was 22 as well. They were bothering me for a good year, though. I kept getting that pain in the ear, and I could feel pressure at the corners of my mouth at night.

I wound up popping a couple of Advils the first day, and was good to go after that. Seriously, it's not all that bad. The drooling does suck, however.

Got mine out last Wednesday Sab, wasn't anything at all. I've always hated needles too, if I see them giving me a shot, I'd go off. The whole procedure basically went as so:

- Get into the office, fill out paperwork, get x-ray.
- Wait 10 minutes or so for the surgeon.
- Get into chair, surgeon gives general risk speech. 'This could happen, usually doesn't blah blah blah.'
- Laughing gas to calm nerves, good stuff.
- IV in the arm, I barely even noticed at all, felt like a pin p***k for a second.
- Surgeon keeps talking to me, 'How's your day, what are you into..' small talk stuff.
- Few minutes later, I'm out of it. Don't think I was actually unconscious, because I remember asking questions as he was doing the procedure. Remember asking "Wow, that's it?" as I kind of felt a tooth being pulled out.

Wasn't much different afterwards. I wasn't too out of it on the ride home, felt sort of inbetween being high and drunk. Was talking with my buddy that drove me and what not coherently (for the most part at least he says.) Had a couple of hamburgers that night for dinner with no problem, chew mostly in the front, small bites.

Hasn't been any worse since, I tried to eat mostly soft foods for the first couple days, but haven't worried about it since. Still not drinking out of a straw, because I just don't want to risk dry socket, I hear that's worse than the whole teeth thing. I went in scared as shit due to all the horror stories and whatnot that I've heard, but it wasn't anything to worry about now that I'm through it (hopefully.) Worst part of the whole thing so far has been the constant taste of blood that was in my mouth for 4-5 days. Starting to go away now though.

You mention surgery.. are your wisdom teeth under the gum?
I have two who stayed under, which is eventually going to require surgery. (I think it could be done at a dentist, but I'd rather have a surgeon do it)
But even for that they should only anesthetize locally, not knock you out completly, unless you request it. (considering how short the whole thing lasts, there's really no point in going out all the way - you'd be home again by the time they knocked you fully out.)

If they grew out, then there's really nothing to be worried about - didn't feel a thing pulling the other two :p

First they apply some kind of liquid on the gum (or at least my dentist did), then they give you a small injection. 5 minutes later you don't feel a thing in that side of the mouth.
Took about 10sec to pull it afterwards, and another min or two to put something in the hole so it would heal faster and not risk an infection.

It felt a little weird for the next week or so, but no pain at all. I had no problems talking either. You do have to eat on the other side of the mouth tho. They gave me some painkillers but didn't have to use them.

Ohh - don't be stupid and pull both sides at the same time, otherwise you're going to have trouble eating for a while and probably feel more pain too. Common sense, but some dentists do both at the same time so they only have to make one appointment and get it over with.

Now taking a blood sample from your finger - that's a lot more painful.

I have all of my wisdom teeth still, I was lucky that they all came in straight. When I was in the Army, every time I went to the dentist they would ask me if I wanted my wisdom teeth pulled.

Dentist: "Wow! You sure do have a mouth full of teeth!"
Rycrias: "Uh, yeah."
Dentist: "You want me to pull your wisdom teeth out?"
Rycrias: "Do they NEED to be pulled?"
Dentist: "Errr....no. They are actually in full and straight.:
Rycrias: "Then I guess i dont want them pulled."
Dentist: "You sure? If you change your mind we can pull them."

WTF? Why in the hell would I WANT to have my wisdom teeth pulled?
Never the less, at every duty station I had a conversation with an Army dentist that basically consisted of this dialogue.

Tell your dentist you'll only do two at a time - ie those on the right side, then the ones on the left side in 1-2 weeks.

You'll safe yourself a lot of pain by doing it that way. 2 more weeks aren't going to be a health risk so why make it more uncomfortable than it has to be?

Personally I'd even make 4 appoinments - once for each tooth. The dentist's schedule is his problem not yours.
