Secure Network:
Go into the settings for your Network hub. It should be an ip address. Something like 192.0.1.101. Look in your manual, it should be in there. Once in the settings, click on the Home Tab and select the Wireless option from the options on the right side.
Make sure WEP is selected 128bit is selected for WEP Encryption and HEX for key type. The key that shows up will be the key required to get onto your network. You'll need this for the laptop.
For the laptop, click on the D-Link AirPlus Wireless Utility and click on Encryption. Put in the HEX key from above and that Data Encryption is selected. Click apply and hit rescan. You should be able to share net connection and files.
Sharing Files:
Right Click My Computer and goto Properties. Under the Computer Name tab, make sure the workgroup item is selected and make sure the workgroup name is the same for both computers. Right click on the drive you want to share and goto Sharing and security.... Make sure the drive or folder has the option: Share this folder.
If you do the same thing for the laptop, you should be able to browse folders on both PCs.
I may have missed some steps so take a look at the manual. Usually helps.

I've had a b***h of a time getting the Microsoft Wireless 720 and the corresponding PCMCIA notebook card (b +g compatible) to work with non-broadcasted SSID's. Windows won't find the access point.
When I used a D-LINk card PCMCIA card , it works fine.
I eventually gave up and put the Access point on its own VLAN segment with a athenticated VPN firewall (kthx Astaro!) and ran it with just WEP ... anyone can attach to it if the sniff the WEP key, but without the SSL'd VPN password they can't get to my internal network (or internet for that matter).

Broadcast SSI is the killer, definitely.
Even with WEP I hear you can crack that shit pretty easily.
Turn off broadcast SSI, give the SSI name something funky only you understand, and on the network card side, just manually assign the SSI and it should go off without a hitch.

All you do is just clone the MAC address Aviger on the wireless segment.
Most routers will allow differing ARP's for MAC addresses
