At 500 yards? Not a chance.
The limit to 802.11 standards is 100 feet. Even then, most home networking routers won't get that far. You can buy ALOT of range extenders if you want I guess but it's going to be more expensive than just getting cable installed in your room.

Do you plan on burying 500 yards of coax?
If the cable company see's cable just laying around first thing they'll do is laugh at you cause you're an idiot, second thing they cut off your dad's service. You can't network cable unless your cable company doesn't care about bandwith or you pay extra for it.
Enjoy digging your 500 yard long, 1/2 foot wide, 1 foot deep trench! Oh and by code it would actually have to be a 16" deep trench.
5 bucks says he just gets cable, that's too much work for Paden =/

atleast he doesnt live here.. its 3 feet deep to run cable through the ground. You would need a week and a bobcat to do that. way cheaper to just buy normal cable service.

paden, don't say son. it makes you sound like a country idiot.
as far as code, who the f**k cares, unless you live in a city with 980234049 code enforcement people driving around all day like i do, then it really doesn't matter.
paden, if you have line of sight, i'm told you can buy these antennas ...
http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2412y.php
have 2 access points, one on your dad's side, one on your side. then connect the access points to the wired network at each location.
IF you have line of sight, this would be plenty i'm told.
for access points, you could use cheap linksys equipment with the linksys signal boosters ... the problem is, even using the cheap equipment, you're prolly looking at 80/per signal booster, 40/per router/access point. 50 per antenna, plus any additional componets you might need.
my point is of course, it can be done.

EMT piping, wait... can you work a pipe bender, it's kind of complicated, for you anyway. I recommend PVC pipe and a heater... you'd probably just melt the pipe though, damn why do you have to be so dumb.
Just buy a cable service, quit trying to be cool.

You live 500 yards from your dads house? In other words, you moved your cot into the barn and want to bring promises of fresh porn with, yes?

Those antennas work great, but try to find the articulating directional ones so your father isn't broadcasting all over the damn place

filter by mac addy and use WEB.. who really cares if you're broadcasting ... especially where paden lives.. he's in the middle of nowhere and his dad owns quite a bit of property around their houses i believe

Yeah it's called being a senior in high school.
If you live with your sister and her life-partner, why don't you just tell them to get cable? If there's already a "thingy" in your area connected to your dads house, it should be pretty cheap to get a second "dealie" to your "house".

Ahh, yeah that's true.
I've done some wireless work for office buildings (and offices in a tank plant, yay!) and we had to use antennas that were a bit more... secure.
I really do hate wireless though, got it going now and IE locks up all the time. It's retarded... I have to log on to AIM or cue up Netscape to push through whatever page I wanted to view in IE.

Paden, I already said this but I feel like I should repeat it. It's a hell of a lot less trouble to just get cable installed at your house.
You COULD run a wired cable to your house...except that you'd need to boost the signal multiple times since, as Kireol stated, cat 5 ethernet is only good for 100 meters. Again, this ignores the fact that running cable on the ground is close to the stupidest thing you can do.
You COULD also use a wireless network with (again) ALOT of extenders...at $40 or $50 (or whatever they cost) this is going to add up fast. And that's ignoring the fact that you'd have to find some way to protect them from the weather. I'm assuming it's open space between your dad's house and your house.
Rootus has a good answer with the LOS antennas...but why go to all the trouble? Getting a broadband connection is really cheap now. Just put down the cash for it and stop making this overly complicated. :p

why would wireless be causing IE to lock up? I never use a wired connection anymore because i have APs whever i go (home, work, friend's houses) and i've never had any issues.

If I knew, I probably wouldn't have a problem.
Could be something fishy with my system, it has it's fair share of problems.
