I just set up wireless internet in my apartment and its refusing to cooperate with me.
The router is in my living room and both pc's are in bedrooms on the opposite side of the wall from the router maybe 25-30 feet away?
There isn't any piping or bathroom stuff in between the router and the pc's but I can't get a steady connection. Both pc's connect with very good connections but these connections get consistently dropped within 2 or 3 mintues and continue dropping until I get fed up and give up on it.
Any of you guys know what I could do to get a steady connection?
All the stuff is Linksys and the pc's are running on XP.

Try configuring the router to use another channel. There should be channels 1-11 available. Is your PC detecting any other wireless networks from your neighbors? That could be interfering, although it usually just makes you get less bandwidth, not lose the connection. Also 2.4 GHz cordless phones, baby monitors, cordless speakers can all interfere.

thanks a lot sin )
and yes, it is detecting 2 other networks from my neighbors, is there anyway to get it to block or ignore those networks?

nope.
All the retail access points default to chan. 6 i think. Switching channels should help immensely.

A year ago I went wireless (Linksys), and it worked like a charm for about a month. Then I noticed it started dropping every couple of minutes... and I also noticed I could now detect a neighbor's network.
I bought a signal booster and larger antennae and fooled around with all the channels... but nada. My wireless network refused to work. I wound up running a cable through the vents.

If you do switch channels, be aware that (for some reason I don't really understand) the channels overlap a bit. So if your neighbor's network is on say, channel 6, you can't just set yours to channel 5 and think you're on a different channel; there will still be some interference. The only way to get total non-overlap of three networks is to have them on channels 1, 6 and 11.
You could also try limiting your speed at the access point down from 11mb/sec to 6 or 3 mb/sec. That wouldn't really slow you down too much, but might make it more stable.

Put child porn on your neighbor's computer(s) and call the cops on them, solves the problem of interfering wireless networks from neighborly influences.
