just today I had a really annoying problem pop p... none of the start menu functions work. My Computer, My Network Places, Add/Remove Programs, even the Recycle Bin doesn't work. If I try opening it up it crashes with one of those annoying requests to send MS your information.
I'm stumped on this one. I think the last thing I tried doing was running SpyBot. Ideas excluding changing platform, buying a new machine or killing myself?

I know with win2k you can just reinstall the \WINNT directory and get a workable system, though some stuff would be screwed up due to the registry being wiped.

If it's Xp did you try their asstastic system restore from an older restore point? |
No, I haven't. The only thing I can get from the error message is this file name "ole32.dll" Im thinking SpyBot may have removed it or maybe I did. I didn't think I'd be able to remove a system process, I guess I did. Now how to get it back..
-Nah-
You can extract it from the system disk (if you have it) or go here... http://www.dll-downloads.com/download_dll.asp and grab it from there...
If it's a problem with IE and replacing the DLL doesn't fix it, you may want to look at this part from the MS KB Q318378. You will need the XP install Cd

. Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer: a. Click Start, and then click Run. b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK. Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media. 2. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step. 3. Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP, or reinstall Windows XP. For additional information about how to complete an in-place upgrade or repair of Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 315341 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/) How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP 4. Ok.. I have a little more information on my problem, now it's really f*****g puzzling. I've never seen this before.
I have 2 machines here first off, both running WinXP. I wrote out a ist of the DLLs that machine 1 was reporting as bad and I went to machine 2 to copy them hoping it would do something.
I go to machine2 and attempted to map a drive back to machine 1 but it sees nothing. There's no directory structure. It sees the drives, but no folders. Great, I thought.. I can't send the files across to the System32 directory like I wanted to.
So I went back to machine 1 and I went in through DOS this time and I saw the weirdest thing... it looks like all the files in the system32 folders are quadrupled. For instance, I was tracking the file shell32.dll and I saw a shell32.dll, a shell32.dll(2), a (3) and a (4), I did the same for msctf.dll, and a handful of others I was following. I can't verify every single file is quadrupled, but at least these are, or I can't figure out why there would be 4 copies of an identical file on the same folder.
I've never seen anything like this. For the moment my machine runs, but I can't use anything that invokes anything Windows Explorer related. So... anyone have any ideas? I am all out.

Reading the site this came from
http://www.atory.com/download/dupe_checker_pro.exe
it may have been trying the system restores that caused the problem to exacerbate. Trying to retore from a restore point when a restore point doesn't exist = bad

nahu, are you seriously using ie still? might i suggest avant or maxthon ( <3 max) or something of that sort if ya dont like or want to try firefox. also, AVG. once youre all fixed up download avg. |
No no Tam.. I use Firefox. Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer is what displays... well, just about everything. From your file manager to your Control Panel, Network Connections... everything. If you don't have Explorer working, basically you have a working Start Menu and little else.

ops sorry was jukas who mentioned IE sorry i was scrolling faster then i was reading apparently.
and ya i know what explorer is use it daily (well most days). i fail at speed reading, sowwy.
ya get it all fixed up now? seriously avg owns, download worthy give it a try while youre doing this fixing up, overhaul, maintanance, whatever it is youre doing to you comp.

Move to Linux =) Its shit like this that caused me to switch (pardon the Applesque cliche)...
You people kill me.
How do you f**k shit up so badly?
Do you install every junk piece of software your friends tell you is great?
Here's a hint
Stop installing b******t on your pc and this shit wont happen.
only install tried and true software from respectable sources.
that doesnt mean install some messenger because it came from a chat web site you read alot.
Alot of that shit is designed ONLY to get your attention and to get you to install it, so that it can install other shit on your pc. Iit doesn't have to and won't ask your permission first.
I have like 3 programs period installed that aren't games, and those are anti virus, adaware, and trillian.
If your add remove programs list has 50 things in it, you're a adumbass, plain and simple.

the last thing I tried doing was running SpyBot |
Last I checked that's a pretty tried-and-true piece of software. It's never f****d up on me this badly.
-Nah-
Spybot is ok but liek I think you mentioned above, if yer not careful, it can mess up your system.
I like how it can block most spyware, rather than just remove it afterwards.
But still, same principle, spybot isn't some lame program designed just to package a spyware installer, it's been around the block and is really well known. I use it and adaware in tandem, along with avg for anti virus.
