some of us dont smoke pipes to solve problems, we smoke pipes because we honestly enjoy doing it. i think that was gandalf's modus operandi as well. i could be wrong though =)

Although I didn't read the books - mostly because I can't read - It did seem in the movie that Gandalf would mostly smoke when he was trying to think or he was troubled by something. This last installment did make it seem that the hobbits were using it for pure enjoyment and relaxation. I'm sure they smoked the pipes for numerous things, most of all to get high as a m**********r.
