I'm typing away, and suddenly I notice some movement on my keyboard - there's an odd little spider. But the weird thing is it was hopping from key to key. It would walk to the edge of a key, then jump to another two or three keys away. It was sort of freaky. Since when do spiders jump? I've only ever seen them crawl. I wonder if it was a mutant.

That is actually a jumping spider .. There are several species of them but they can be creepy. I personally, am not a big fan of any spiders .. Spiders that Jump are > then spiders that crawl around.

...and I've seen spiders like that before, but usually outside. The ones I have seen are black colored, small and compact. They aren't hairy or anything, but they are freaking quick!

Quick is an understatement ... Those bastards can jump faster than you can even see .. I dont bother wasting my energy trying to smash those .. All other creepy fookin spiders .. WATCH THE f**k OUT.

You're lucky.
Most of the spiders I see/kill in my house are Brown Recluse spiders.
I see alot of Black Widows in my area to buy mostly they are in the barn.
