Ogg is the name of an open souce multimedia project maintained by the xiph.org foundation. Vorbis refers to the lossy general purpose audio compression format that surpasses mp3 in quality and rivals new formats such as AAC and TwinVQ.

Basically, the guys who invented MPEG and thus MP3 encoding routines have done like the Compuserve GIF idiots: "WE R GUNNA PATENT THIS AND MAKE GAZILLIONS."

im pretty sure ogg is the audio layer for ogm files which surpass mpg in quality also. ive downloaded quite a few ogm movie's and they are pretty awesome quality.

well see divx and xvid encode into mpeg files still. if you encode them into ogm files is where the quality difference shows up.

typically ppl use divx and xvid into avi's though. i guess i should have stated divx avis=)
