|
|
|
so I've had my tongue pierced for about 6 years now. I was always forgetting to have a smaller bar put in place like they recommended, finally it became a problem because I was not able to properly trill an "R" sound in either Spanish or Russian, so I decided to change it out. I didn't go back to the original place where I got it pierced because it was 6 years ago and it's in Berkeley, so I went to the local piercing/tatoo shop.
I bought a new bar and a flat bead and even had the piercer install it. He warned me I might have some mild irritation for a few days as my mouth got used to the new jewelry.
As predicted my tongue got very sore and eating's been a bit of a challenge. The weirdest thing started happening tho and I'm not sure what to make of it. On the underside of one's tongue, you know that fleshy clump of tissue you have under there that looks like seaweed? Well every time I start eating or something that causes the piercing to move (I am now fairly certain of this) I have a small painless.... blister(?) that fills up with clear liquid in that fleshy mass.
This is bothering me, but I'm not sure if I should swap posts back out or wait until the tenderness goes away to see if the blister goes away too. I've watched the blister and I am failry positive it only happens when I further irritate the piercing, because I will not notice anything there until I start eating then suddenly I can feel the blister popping up the underside of my tongue.
Anyone had anything similar happen to them? I wanted to wait until the soreness went away before going back to the shop to ask them. As far as I know the post was surgical steel just like my old one was.
I could post pictures.. I don't think it's a very pretty picture to take, tho.

Sounds to me like you could be allergic to the metal that the barbell is made out of. I have had my tongue pierced for 5 years now and never had a problem but that was because I was 100% sure of the nickle content in the metal--if it even has any what so ever. What kind of material is it, 316L Surgical Stainless Steel? Titanium, Niobium--the more I know probably better advice I can give you, I spent the better part of 3 years in tattoo and piercing parlors, as well as selling body jewelry, if you need to IM me or what ever I'll see if I can help you out.

I'll be honest with you I didn't ask because I had never had allergic reactions to any metals (I have 3 ear piercings on each ear) and I've done, I think that whole range of metals in terms of piercings.
I will call the shop and ask them tomorrow, is it possible to be allergic to a metal in one part of your body and not in another? This could explain it.

Yes you can. I have seen lots of people when I was selling body jewelry that had issues with their tongue, for some reason its really sensitive <chuckles>. If I use Stainless Steel, I won't go less then 316L Surgical Stainless steel which is about the best you can get. Niobium is expensive, comes in all sorts of colors (if thats something you look for), and generally has a very low allergic reaction in MOST people. Titanium is also the same way, it comes in different colors, and contains 0 nickle which is generally what people that get piercings are allergic too.
If your looking to get body jewelry and don't know where to go, check out http://www.brushapple.com/ They have good jewelry, thing is they are a wholesale company, thus you have to buy like 50 dollars worth of body jewelry, but it comes out to be worth it. If you can get a few of your friends that are into body modification, have them check it out, and everyone pitch in for stuff. Or, if you have friends body jewelry makes semi-decent gifts (christmas is semi-close if you celebrate it). I'll see if I can hunt out some more of my body jewelry sites and help ya out Na.h

Never wear anything but gold or better in piercings man.
I could barely tollerate silver in my ear without it getting infected, and if I wear anything but gold or better on my finger, it tuns green.
Lower grade metal is like this....some people can handle it, but some people have bad reactions to it. It's best to just assume you'll have a bad reaction, rather than tempt fate, expecially in your mouth....and other places.

Gold isn't good in your mouth if you want the honest to god truth considering the fact that it tarnish's because of the acids in your mouth, unless you would like to have the constant take out and throw it in jewelry cleaner and then rinse in alcohol and pop it back in your mouth. Been there done that <chuckles>. Titanium and Niobium are good alternatives for oral piercings.
Any other piercings I will agree with you on the gold or better but Oral piercings can be outlandishly tempermental at times.

Yeah... I guess I was just sort of on the fence about whether I wanted to wait until the irritation went down or swapping it out now. I know for a fact the post in my tongue is not silver, it's surgical steel. I had enough sense to not get a silver post in there. Anything that tarnishes isn't going near any piercing on my body

Um, gold doesn't tarnish. It's one it's properties that makes it valuable.
I guess if it was mixed with another metal it might tarnish, but pure gold cannot, will not tarnish under any normal, everyday circumstances.

Actually 14K gold does get a dingy green color on it dependant upon how acidic/basic your mouth is, I had the problem once, but <shrug> I never really liked gold in white people period, thus me being white took it out and went back to my surgical stainless steel. <chuckles> I have seen gold tarnish, or dinge what ever you want to call it in several people <shrug> maybe they weren't hygenically clean in their mouth who knows. However I did enjoy them as customers, it was like every 3 months they would come drop another 100 dollars for a new one--and anytime they did I would always end up with a bonus.

I agree if you mean yellow gold, I don't like it much, it reminds me of cheap costume jewelery because of the color.
Kinda ironic that the real thing reminds me of the fake, but it's the truth =p
I like white gold though.

I've actually had a reaction to gold. Started to turn the flesh an off color and it actually infected/blistered the skin. Due to that i dont touch anything now except silver period.

Na h? You can't take that ring out yourself?
I've had my tongue peirced for about 7-8 years now too and for the past 5+ been able to leave the barbell out for a month or better without a problem at all.
They also make plastic barbells too, I have one of em cause they were cheap and had lots of pretty colors for the balls on the ends hehehe
I did find that the "place holder"/invisible bar was kinda uncomfortable when I tried it (it came with the plastic set up, got 1 regular bar, 6 pairs of colored balls and the invisible bar in one pack for about $15 at Sally Beauty Supply)

I can change it out myself but I can't change it back in. The bar they gave me is very short, it's supposed to be totally unobtrusive. They also put a flat bead on both the top and the bottom. The f*****g thing is like .001 inches wide, there is no way I can s***w that on to the bar in a mirror.

It might not be anything at all =/
When I changed my tongue piercing to a smaller one (which I did twice) it was very tender for a couple days, especially underneath it.

I've only had my d**k sucked by 1 girl with a tongue ring and, as good as she was at it, the sensation wasn't so unique I could tell a difference. Then again, my c**k is lined with Ultra Endurance Stud-o-Flesh, which might mean it's not as sensitive as most.
In short, f**k you and your entire family tree.
