virus warning....

i was on the newsgroups and clicked on a message (did not open an attatchment), when my norton popped up a message about a backdoor virus. i did a scan to check for it and nothing came up.

can anyone tell me if norton stopped it or is there something else i need to do to check for or get rid of it?
