RADEON 9700 128MB at 212$ USD

or

GeForce4 TI 4800 at 155$ USD

and are both these cards top of the line of they're specific line? or are there better ones? i mention these because from what i've read and been told, these are the top 2 gaming cards out there at the moment.

i'm upgrade from a geforce 2, and so far i love Nvidia...drivers are awesome, card is awesome, never had a problem compared to my old voodoo 2 and 3 that i used to use where i'd have problems out the ass and have a gazillion and 1 drivers to chose from. made it confusing, compared to Nvidia having one driver package for one line of cards (i think hehe)

thanks for the advice.

Can't really go wrong with either of them. If you mostly play EQ go with the G-Force, at least everybody seems to think the Radeon doesn't preform as well with EQ as other games. Otherwise get the Radeon.

I don't think the 4800 is compatible with DirectX 9 either, so the Radeon might last you longer.

I think you can get GeForce FX now, but from what I have seen they are expensive and not really any better than the Radeons.

Geforce FX blows. Basically a ti4600 with slighty better HQ mode

Get the radeon 9800pro it's the best on the market now.

Running with and being compatable with are not the same thing in this case.

Any GF card should run with DX9.

Only Radeons use the new DX9 features that must be programmed into the game. (SWG is going to be the first game to use juse some of those features)

Hardware forum! Hardware forum!

True story... my store just had inventory this weekend and we got rocked on videocards. We fired some numbnuts last week for stealing a Radeon 9700, and this was after nearly catching him two week prior to that. (I wanted him gone then, but 'just cause' reared it's ugly head)

As it turns out, he got away with quite a bit. Huge Radeon fan I guess, we were missing 9 Sad

Geforce, ATI has s****y driver support. Even if it is faster, it doesn't mean jack shit if the game you're trying to run it with doesn't support those features (which many of them don't). Read: SB users cannot play if they have an ATI card, until ATI releases new drivers for the card (cold chance in hell of that happening).

Ouch, that's quite the store loss. Hopefully that won't cost you since you are the inventory control clerk.

your quote is like 2 years ago opinions, back then I would of agreed with it.

But....

ATI drivers are now updated at least every couple months.

newest release is The ATI Catalyst 3.2 03/13/03

in fact 5 new drivers in the last 5 months and one due out any time now.

example:
02/10/2003: The ATI Catalyst 3.1
01/10/2003: The ATI Catalyst 3.0
12/09/2002: The ATI Catalyst 02.5
11/14/2002: The ATI Catalyst 02.4
09/12/2002: The ATI Catalyst 02.3
08/01/2002: The ATI Catalyst 02.2
06/13/2002: The ATI Catalyst 02.1

i think thats enough of a point Razz
but if not...

I havent had a game that didnt play on a Radeon card yet, or better yet a card that played all the games as pretty and fast as a radeon.

And as for Shadowbane over half of the people playing have a ATI card
for the people who are to lazy to figure out the problem SB was having with ATI cards heres the simple fix...
taken off the Shadowbane site directly:
The Radeons cards compresses textures by default so in Shadowbane they are doubly compressed.
In the config directory of your Shadowbane directory, you will find a file called Arcanepref.cfg.
Open it with Notepad and in it find the option "compresstexture".
Change the TRUE to FALSE and everything should work fine.

(Note: shadowbane was forceing all cards to do something that the Radeon already did by default, whos fault is that?)

only Geforce FX and better or Radeon 9500 or better card can run Direct x9 games of the future without turning off all the effects to get decent frame rates.
Direct x9 is backwards compatable so systems that have Ti series or older cards will still work. but only direct x9 cards can take advantage of the future programming in gameing.

the number one selling video card from the begining of last year and still going strong is the ATI radeon.

in my opinion if you can afford the 9700pro thats the best buy at the moment, if not the 9500pro is the next choice hands down.
