so i'm gonna build a new gaming machine. got everything pretty much figured out except which route to go on my video card. prolly 50% of the time i'm gonna be on this 19" monitor. the other 50% of the time i'm going to have this machine hooked up and using my television for my monitor. its a 60" sony sxrd lcd. 1920x1080p native resolution. so.........

do i get one really nice video card (the 7900gt for around $360) OR do i go for a reasonable card x2 (the 7600gt x2 at $180 each) and run them in SLI mode?

7600gt http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814130283

7900gt

if other specs are required i can add them as needed for this new machine.

I use a 37 inch LCD with 1920x1080 res full time for my monitor. If you want to run games like Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion at that resolution without any slowdown, your goal should be 7800GT x2 or better. I have a monster computer with 2 7800GTs, and if I max out the "grass effect", etc on Oblivion, my frame rate gets slow enough to notice...so if you want to play at true 1080p res (on your TV), you need some horsepower.

If it has to be between a 7600x2 or a 7900, I would get the 7900... with the goal of picking up a second card when they are cheaper.

If you only plan to game on the 19", then the 7600x2 will treat you well

i read a couple of tests of 2 sli'd 7600s vs 7800
while it could be just the brands of cards/setup etc
but the single card did better in the tests
(i looked but could not find the links)
anyway
as Desflurane said, they test sites said the same thing about buying the best single card you can get and 2nd later

I wont say I am a expert, but the better card usually does a better job all around. It seems the sli combo actually does worse on a lot of things, unless you are pushing the game you are playing in max graphics, with all the bells and whistles on. If you play games like that, then the sli combo may be the way to go. I think its tomshardware that usually has fps reviews of all the combos of single and sli cards. It seems that if your not pushing the card, it slows down running through both if its something silly like 800 x 600 graphics.

I tried to look it up some, but they didn't have much in the way of 7600 vs 7900 comparisons, but the 7600 sli performed well against the 7900. I would personally just get the better card, and then if its getting slow or you want more performance, you can sli the better card down the road, when its cheaper. Thats what I did on my system.

Misread it at first, thought you said 7800, but yeah get the 7900, it actually performed slightly better than the 7600sli, and then you can pop another in later.

went with the 7800gt for $340.

pretty much everyone was saying to go with the big one for the extra resolution. then if i want to run duals in a year or so i can just buy another of these because they'll be so cheap by then.

Oblivion framerates are no way to benchmark a system, the game is horribly tuned and you need to tweak assloads of settings for optimal performance no matter what option level you run it at.
