I have a direct fiber line into the house here, but just use it for DSL. Only advantage is not having to use a modem, split a direct Twisted pair line off the phone wiring in the house and snap it into the back of a router, bam! It is a little faster then advertized though.

if i stand on my porch i can almost see where the fiber optic lines are
but reportedly would cost them like $25k to run the line over to our little group of houses, so it isn;t going to happen

For some reason it refuses to recognize my address. Fortunately I can get DSL for either $27 for 3mb or $41 for 6mb

fiber in your house? hahaha. not ever in your lifetime.
the fastest backbone i've ever been on was 20mb/s at telepacific in down town LA. i could upload at 650kb/s to people and download at unbelievable speeds.
maybe you should look into the price of a DS3 or anything bigger. Most DS3's that I know of run 3k-5k a month. This is from LEC's. I doubt you'll find it any cheaper. DS3 = 45mb/s.

i have worked for almost every major fiber optic company in the US. fiber is a huge undertaking. its also a waste. its like building a 3 story 8 bedroom house for each resident of government housing.
cable provides enough speed for what any consumer would need. fiber has pretty much unlimited bandwidth, and its a waste of money to put fiber into each home. now, internal wiring of homes with fiber is reasonable. but the amount of time to splice fiber from a LEC into a home, just not gonna happen. Most companies can barely keep up doing laterals into businesses. That takes months for just a simple cut.
Also realize laying fiber costs millions. Its something like 1 million per mile.

The whole island i live on in Norway has Fiber access. The power company was the people behind the build of the lines. They lost a ton of mmoney the first year, as its expensive to spread, but they will have it all back in 7-9 years.
Standard line is 1mbit up/down.
I have 3 mbit up/down, 56 channels of digital TV, and 2 lines for IP telephone. I pay about 130 USD a month.
Good thing is, no matter how much load your neighborhood has at night, you still get at least what you pay for. I still havent gotten under said up/down speeds, testing my line. Of course when i DL from s****y connections its slower.

also realize when you're talking about a new place or new homes versus existing cabeling, its much easier. cable > fiber, until telecom catches up. and with the crash of the telecom industry, i don't see it happening.

I get surprised when I read stuff like this.
In Sweden all major ISPs offer dsl connections of 24mibit for about 30-40 euros a month. I myself has 10 mbit fiber connection for about 35 euros a month. I can upgrade to 100 mbit for about the double, though I dont think it is worth it.
