I'm writing a paper for my psychology class, and my professor is very tough when it comes to grammer, just need some corrections here. I will probably come back for more.

When you are telling someones age should you say, for example. "the 19 year-old" or the 19 year old? With or without the dash?

Well in research papers I think they also like for any number under 100 to be spelt out. That 8 year old is gay. " That eight year old is gay. " Don't know about your question though. Sad

I'd tell you, but I'm a firm believer that if you make a grammatical error in a post about proper grammar, you have no business being in college.

LOL. When I make a post on Realpoor, or anywhere else for that matter, I don't sit here and think "Well I better get an 'A' on this post, or I might fail realpoor. Most of the time I just type without thinking, and never reread my spelling or grammar, because basically I don't give a f**k. On the other hand, on my paper I do give a f**k, therefore I take my time, and made sure I didn't make a costly mistake, that could have resulted in a point off.

Infact nothing p****s me off more than you people who come in here and try your hardest to look for someones mistake, just to try to make yourself look better. It was funny the first couple of times when people started doing it, but now it's old.

You remind me of the people, that when you are talking to them, they will interrupt you in the middle of your sentence just to tell you that you misused a word.

When in doubt, rewrite the sentance.

"at 19 years of age"

"Jimmy, 19 at the time,"

"under 20"

ect

Pick up the latest MLA manual or, if you are heading into psych or law, the latest APA manual. Those are the standards by which most papers are judged when it comes to college, so you may as well get used to it in high school (I'm assuming you are in high school?)

Spellcheck sucks. I don't use it, and I strongly discourage my students from using it. The problem is that people tend to use it with the image of their English teacher proofing their papers in their head--they take for granted that when spellcheck and grammarcheck are finished, their paper is perfect. NOT.

Lastly, about spelling things correctly: I believe that either you do it all the time--or you don't. Most of us either can spell for the most part or can't--so we tend to write as per our personal proclivity. Mine is to spell correctly--and to spot someone else's spelling error at 20 paces :p
