its really easy to understand actually once its explained or someone explains it to you.
when you are looking to buy ram for your comp. check to see if you have a ddr or ddr-2 memory already installed if so then you know what type to get. if you can, get the same brand name as the one already installed so you dont deal with compatability issues.
now find out how much total ram your computer has because most computers can actually only hold up to 4gig of ram without wasting it. so lets say you have 1 gig of ram already in your computer..you should either go with another 1 gig stick or go for a 2 gig. try to avoid a 4gig as that will be wasting money and ram
actual figures on ram are dependant to what computer you have so best bet is to look at your user manual and look up what it can handle or go to the brand name website (www.dell.com, www.hp.com, etc.) and find a froum or spec's part of the site and figure out what you can do.
Hopefully this helps you out..if not message me and ill give you my aim so i can further explain it.

Turn off your pc, unplug it. open up the case and locate your ram stick, there should be like a clip top and bottom undo them pull it out and it will say on it what type it is it will have something like pc3200/pc2700 etc. i dunno if memtest logs what kind of ram it is.

well how long ago did you get your computer
cause ddr2 didn't come out ... until ... crap I don't recall when. And even then, if you got your computer in the time in between the mobo may have 2 slots each for both the different types.
