I have one computer running off my cable modem's ethernet port, and one running off it's usb port. I have a unique IP for each computer.... no subnet. How can I set it up to use windows file sharing w/o a third party program. One is running XP and the other 98.

Dunno if it'll work but here goes: have both computers sharing the resources you want them to. Then, from the desktop on each, double-click My Network Places, then double-click add network place. Type in the IP of the other computer and hit next. If it says invalid or something, add http:// in front of it and then try. If that doesn't work, get a router and some wire or a cheap nic card and a crossover wire and set up internet connection sharing.
Also, they should be on the same workgroup and router > ICS.

just put winxp on the other computer.... Would be so much easier to network them both that way.

That won't work unless your cable modem has routing or switch capabilities (which is much more common for DSL modems). The cheapest route would be to get another nic card and a crossover cable. Plug your xp box into the cable modem via USB and then run the crossover between the 2 computers. Win XP has the ability (although s****y) to have it act as a DHCP server if you want, Or you can just set static IP's for each one as long as they both have the same subnet mask.

Visit that site, it has a bunch of articles on setting up networking in windows.
