had windows ME, motherboard crapped out, replaced it and was told by tech that windows was probably badly corrupted. so i got windows xp and booted from cd drive. i formatted the hard drive and then went into setup. its going fine until it gets to the final part (6 minutes left) and then comes up with a problem...

windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

You did delete the winme partition that was on the hdd right?
Heres a neat program i used to use it when i worked for gateway, you can test hdd multiple ways and even write 0's to the hdd which erases everything nicely.

download, boot to dos prompt with a cd or boot disk and put the disk u download it on in. type gwscan and hit enter and that should bring up the main menu, just choose write 0's Razz

welp got windows xp to install after like 10 tries. can get online and did all the windows updates. this machine now comes up with 'errors' and shuts down often. not really a certain error that comes up. they vary. it then does a 'physical memory dump' and then reboots.

i downloaded that gateway HDD tester to a floppy, unzipped it and followed directions. but it does not start up when i reboot the machine as the directions say. so i tried opening it from the control panel a:. it comes up with the black box for about 3 seconds and then the box goes away.

sidenote. this hardrive is a maxtor 40g i got about 20 months ago. i use to have it partitioned with 5gig to linux and the other 35 to windows. i ran disk defrag and noticed that the front had stuff, then a big white spot (free space) and then another chunk of info. is this normal or is my hdd messed up some and that space in the middle shouldn't be there?

anyhow, ideas?

also, the format i did was part of the windows xp installation. it gave me options to delete a partition. i deleted both of them so i just had 40gig of free space. it took maybe 25 minutes.

is this 'format' a good one or do i need to do a better one using the standard c:format or whatever it is?

Did you put the WinXP cd in and boot the system and reformat? Or did you just put CD in while in windows and run the install?

You have to get to a dos prompt by booting to a cd before putting the floppy disk in, try making a boot disk.
Then type gwscan in at the dos prompt, if it asks for a password it is
gw2k

That's either a driver problem, or multiple devices conflicting. Or maybe heat. I'd try taking every single unnecessary board out of the system and running that way for awhile, then put stuff back one at a time.

When you boot to winxp disk, choose what partition u want to delete..
Then after deleteing it, choose a ntfs partition format (quick) will work.
But i strongly recommend running the gwscan 3.15 quick test 1st, and after you run it if there is errors choose repair.
If it doesn't come up with errors, you might wanna run the extended test.
But usally the quick test is enough.
Also if u want to erase everything on the drive, choose write 0's to drive.
Depending on the size of the drive it can take a long time, because the program physically goes through and writes 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 to each sector of the hdd.
After you write 0's, boot to winxp disk and install windows.
