For the sake of b******g - what is the deal with all my stupid PC programs that want to warn me about retarded things?
I shut off my laptop, but before it will shut down I get two popup dialog boxes that I have to click on. "Warning, if you place your PC into hibernate mode, you will no longer be able to play musical selections, click OK to continue", and "Warning, if you shut off your computer you will no longer be able to send and receive data over your VPN, click OK to continue". If I shut down my SIP softphone, I get "Do you really want to shut down the phone application? You will no longer be able to place and receive phone calls".
I mean, that's pretty much the whole point. If I'm shutting off my PC, it pretty much goes without saying that I'm not going to be using my VPN, playing music, or making phone calls. That's sort of the definition of "shutting off".
I think sometimes just because Microsoft provides a callback to inform applications of stuff, idiot developers feel duty bound to make the callback do something. "Hey, we should put in a warning message!". Or are they so arrogant that they think "hey, maybe he'll realize that if it disables our cool application, he'll think twice about shutting down that PC". So dumb.

You know what p****s me off.
Stupid programs that warn you there's an update more than once.
It's computer-harassment, that's what it is.

No app should modify focus under normal circumstances. An app should take focus if and only if there is a critical issue (like a virus detected) or critical system error. Too many coders think their app is the most important and that you have to know when their app is doing something. It isn't Microsoft's fault, it's just lousy app design. There are effective, more subtle ways to notify the user (like a flashing icon in the system tray) that an app needs attention.
If an app comes up and takes focus away from the app I'm working in, I typically delete the app and write a nasty email to the developer .

Reverse engineer it. I did it to WinRar to remove the nag once.
