well first the computer tech at local pc store said my motherboard was bad. so i replaced it with an Msi k7n2 delta. same processor, an athlon 1800+xp pro.
got it home and it was hell trying to load windows. errors every minute or two and shutting the install down. finally got it loaded and still had problems. you guys gave me advice that my hdd was prolly bad. it was and i replaced it with a WD 40g 7200 spin U100 8m cache.
well i installed it, did the partition thing (25m, 11m, 2.1m) and loaded windows. 1 time duriing the whole installation the pc just shut down/reboots. got it loaded ok. then loaded motherboard drivers. then eq. during eq the pc just shut down/reboots like 3 times over the course of the 7 cd's.
then i installed aol 9.0 dsl. (yeah i know, aol sucks but hey. gotta use whats available locally) install was fine.
then i went to windows update. during the first 44 installs at one time (basic stuff the update recommended) the machine just shut down/reboots 5-6 times. got that part installed though.
then i did the winnt pack 1 or something like that. was the first critical update. that one critical update my machine shut down like 5 times alone during the 1.9m download and install. finally it got thru and did all its 'correcting' of my windows xp install. all the dll crap and everything.
well now when i turn on my machine it starts up and literally 10 seconds into it it reboots. pretty much same spot everytime. i can't get it to do anything. it just continually reboots at that same spot every time it gets to that point. endless cycle.
ideas?

Most likely it is the blaster worm, if you can get into Administrator tools -> Services -> Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and under "Recovery" set it to NOT reboot the computer.
Once done with that - get blasterfix.exe from symantic and fully patch windows (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Or I could be totally wrong and none of this will do shit for you.

Since it was restarting during a Windows install I'd say it's not the blaster worm. I vote for power supply.

Depending on if you're using an OEM heatsink or not, it may be your computer's failsafe/shut down settings. MSI has a default low setting for their CPU temp/fan speed shutdown limit, and OEM fans usually run somewhat slow in terms of rpm.
Check your BIOS settings for the shutdown temp/fan speed.

Is it rebooting in the same spot during the Windows loading process and is it XP? I had a problem with XP doing this after an upgrade. If you change certain components or enough components, windows thinks it's a different machine and your key becomes invalid. It usually occurs after you've done the windows updating. I had to call MS customer service and fix the problem through them.

btw, I needed that simple explanation of how to get rid of the blaster.exe for my laptop. I read all about how to get the patch fix thingy, but no where did I see how to disable the reboot so I could actually download anything. I just kept putting it off. (laptop not used that much to go online)
Workin on getting that bad puppy cleared out just now. Thanx Uggie-poo!

Heat issues.
I'm going with "your heat sync is not propperly placed on your processor chip"
Same thing happened to me years ago.
the fan or sync is either upside down or not on right.

If you think it's heat, download something like Motherboard Monitor or one of the zillion clones that sit in your systray and display the CPU temperature. If you're not stable enough to get that far, try underclocking your CPU (drop the multiplier a few notches, assuming your bios or motherboard dip switches allow it which they probably do) and see if that helps - if it's really heat it should.
