Are you using firewire or USB to connect? If you're using USB your ports may not be 2.0 enabled and hence the lockup is caused by a slow read/write time to the large hdd of your iPod.

the ipod checks its file list against what is installed on your pc every time you plug it into a pc.. this is a copy right protection thing to make sure you cant download songs off of other peoples computers (unless they happen to have the exact same files as you lol)..thats what you get for buying apple tho.. have fun with that ipod, ill have fun knowing you have to shell out another 40 bucks for third party software before it functions like it should already.

I thought of that, so I added a usb2.0 card. It freezes even more when plugged into the 2.0 card (completely unusable). At least with the 1.0 usb, it comes back after a few mintues, then will transfer songs.

If you keep making posts like this I might end up liking you.

In other news, iPods may make some people happy but not me.

er...itunes will sync your ipod to your mp3 library if you want it to. This does nothing to keep me from downloading songs off other peoples computers.

if you dont like itunes, winamp and wmp will both work with the ipod.

^^Hi, I'm stupid and don't know what the f**k I'm talking about.

Just use Firewire. Bypass the stupid USB 2.0 b******t you have to go through to get it to work with WinXP.

Use iTunes to sync. You can set it so that it doesn't check your library when you plugin the iPod which will solve your 'lockup' problem.

Do you have a large library? That's why you might be locking up. As I said, just disable automatic sync. I have over 35 gigs on my PC and no lockups.

If you don't like iTunes, you can try Xplay: www.mediafour.com/xplay It basically adds iPod manipulation through the WinXP shell. You can right click files and send to iPod and browse your iPod through Windows Explorer and drag/drop files to your iPod.

I'll probably try the firewire approach, although I need a fw card as well. Thats probably easier to try than reinstalling windows.

Just thought I'd give an update. I replaced my pos compusa usb2 card with a belkin usb2+firewire card. This card also has a plug to power it from the powersupply instead of the motherboard.

Things seem to work fine now. Overall, a great purchace. Im still really happy with the ipod's interface. For instance, shuffle works on whatever playlist your playing. The way its suposed to work.

LOL must you keep making it so easy for me to prove how little you know?

The iPod works exactly as it's supposed to. How exactly doesn't it? Your claims about copyright protected mumbo jumbo is pure b******t.

I provided the link to XPlay in case someone doesn't like iTunes. XPlay is not necessary to get any functionality out of the iPod that iTunes + iPod doesn't already have. XPlay just let's you do it from Windows Explorer as opposed to iTunes. Matter of preference.

I'm done with you now fool. Try a little harder next time.

And yeah Lotek. The shuffle anything feature is the main reason I got the iPod over the Napster, Creative, or Dell iPod like players.

I think he was actually referring to your comment about the synchronization feature being a "copyright protection thing." The software you commented on was a completely seperate issue which he addressed anyways, because for a 40GB mp3 player that fits in your pocket, an extra 50 bucks is f*****g worth it. The only problem I've heard about the iPod is that it will skip if you wiggle it enough, which is fine, Im sure we're all used to portable CD players by now, and I'm sure the iPod is not quite as bad.
