after the first 20 seconds it goes to static. is this some sort of anti-piracy device?

had the same thing happen to me with several different mp3s, using kazaa lite - not sure exactly what the problem was, didn't look into it too much other than to delete the file(s) and download other copies.

wtf?
are you playing them in kazaa? it could just be a problem with kazaa's mp3 player program...
but if it isnt, ive never heard of, and can hardly concieve of, something like that happening...

I opened Nero wave editor and it looks like someone has chopped it up pretty good, there are pockets of music in there still but most of it is this awful scratching noise.

ive never had that happen before
there are very few things i could conceive of doing something like that .. i mean to do that youd have to actually corrupt the data of a song .. its not just like "oh no its scratchy!" thats actual data being edited to make it sound like that..
First idea:
a virus .. it is .. conceivable that a virus somehow corrupted the data of mp3s on peoples computers (mp3 specific virus or not) .. this would make sense in that it is something recently happening and happening on a seemingly random basis .. i do remember reading something about RIAA having an mp3 virus "in the works" or them having some idea of using a virus to f**k with peoples mp3s (and they call themselves legal crusaders) .. dont quote me on that though i dont remember where i read it
Second idea:
bad ripping .. whoever ripped the songs from cd used some really s****y program, or a horribly scratched disk .. i tend to rule this one out because you say you are getting it from many random sources
Third idea:
kazaa purposely f*****g with your mp3s .. i dont know about this one, unless you downloaded a new version recently i would almost completely cast this out, if so then it has a slight possibility ..
Fourth idea:
kazaa not purposely f*****g with your mp3s .. rather their data is getting corrupted .. i *HIGHLY* doubt this .. data just doesnt corrupt like that, 1s and 0s dont move around because youre downloading them .. it is at least conceivable that something like this could be happening and it is an error with kazaa .. but it is incredibly highly improbable, in fact, if it was, way more people would be having the problem
--------
Personal note:
There are a lot of mp3 files i have that i downloaded off kazaa and ive noted something very very strange about a few of them,
when running them in the EverQuest mp3 player, sometimes they play WAY FASTER than they should .. the whole timer thing is counting seconds like they are 1/10 of a second and speeding through the song
this is the only place ive noted this happening, it doesnt happen in winamp or anything else ive viewed them in
i have no explaination that stands out as to why certain files would do this and most not .. but when it comes to everquest programming, the only explaination you really need is that they programed it heh

This may or may not be related, but I saw something on Tech TV where several people were actually uploading MP3s where they barked in time with the song or did other types of vandalism to discourage files sharing. Though for some odd reason, the guy they interviewed was from crap band no one's ever heard of, and "he just wanted to protect his intellectual property".
I personally think this is what's happening. More and more people like those who post here saying, "Hey I know, I bet if we made a bunch of popular MP3s really f****d up and uploaded them to Kazaa we could make atleast some one cry."

i had another idea ..
perhaps there is a new way of encrypting CD data that makes certain ripping programs not function correctly ..
since you are getting them on only songs of the same name and not same length/size
are these songs off relatively new albums?

yah that could easily explain it horaxe ..
but it would be so popular as to happen on different copies of the same song?

The VBR is unlikely, seeing as how anyone who knows their head from their ass will encode in VBR.

Just find a good internet radio station to listen to through Winamp and download Streamripper. t just rips the tracks from the stream and drops the MP3's into a nice little folder for you complete with ID tags and all the great stuff.
