something that will read a movie file (mpg,avi,wmv,mov,etc) and i tell it where in the movie i want it to take a snapshot and output a jpg.
anything like that exist? console version preferably

From what I have heard from friends of mine on the fable team is that it sucks serious ass.....
Hopefully it'll be better before they release it, they had one code set that was way too linear, now they cant test the title because the new code is way too un-linear.
*Shrug* I have not seen much on the title yet...

www.freshmeat.net ? I can't think of anything like that off-hand especially anything that'd run without X and a Window Manager but I've seen stranger shit posted to Freshmeat and Sourceforge...

I think he's looking for something to do real time vid capture frash from an avi or mpeg or what not. Gallery would work once he's got the output pic, but he needs something that does vid caps

and I want to use it for movies too, but i dont see how gallery makes a thumb of a movie. the version i have just shows some generic movie thumb

Just realized something. If you have Gallery already installed, you prolly have Netpbm and/or imageMagick.
try: file filename.mpeg
(yes, the command is file)
http://netpbm.sourceforge.net/doc/directory.html
will show you all the lil programs (aka the unix way) that Netpbm includes. AWSOME command line stuff. I used it to convert 4000+ avatars that were differening sizes to 100x100 very simply  I dunno if it has the mpeg/avi stuff you need in it, but I know that the 'file' command recognized the stuff. Check this:
