I was wondering why my Oblivion was crashing every 15 minutes, why my WoW framerates would go to 80+fps then inexplicably drop to 20 for a few minutes, then go back up, and why my system would behave wierdly in general when any stressing game was run on it but run beautifully any other time.
On a whim, I check what my video card temperature was while running Oblivion after an extended session.
To my utter horror it was 115C! OMG! BBQ in my computer!
I thought it was just the fact that I have an overclocked 7800GTX in a small form factor PC. Tried opening the case, installing a case fan in the slot next to the video card, having a fan blow into the case, still it ran hot as hell.
Finally for some reason I decided to look in and peek at the video card while a game was running. THE FAN WAS NOT ON. wtf.
So, in conclusion, I can't believe it took me about a month to figure out that my system was having problems because it was overheating, then taking another week to figure out it was because the stupid fan on my video card was burnt out or something.
I got an Arctic Cool replacement on the way. Hopefully installing it isn't too hard 
Soon hopefully I can play Oblivion for longer than 30 minutes at a time with a decent framerate and GPU temperatures that aren't significantly above the boiling point of water. =D

Go to your computer store and buy a CPU fan.
Mount it to your card, look across your motherboard for a three pronged connection where you can plug it in. Might have to get creative or even extend the connection, but can be done.
$20 is a little cheaper than a new Vcard.

Most computer stores that have decent inventory will carry CPU fans. Cheapos are about $5, more expensive ones are about $10. If no store nearby, go online at a shop like tigerdirect.
Almost all of them are variable speed, which is controlled by voltage, which usually varies in accordance to processor temp. Depending on your motherboard, you might have to tell it that you want fan #2 to run at a certain constant or minimum speed or voltage. 3000 RPM is a typical speed and should work fine for most applications.
Older mobos only have one plugin for fans, but lately, they're coming out with as many as 3 places where you can plug one in because people are avid about using case fans.
Depending on the size of your card, you might want to actually try a case fan instead. They're bulkier, but other than that, very little difference.
When you look at the connection, it'll be pretty obvious where to hook it into your motherboard. The mobo will usually have small print nearby that says something like cpu1, cpu2, or fan1, fan2
The mobo book will also show you where your fan plugs are.
Sometimes it helps vidcards stay cooler if they're blown free of any collected dust, and other cards are moved further away if possible. The newer vidcards generate quite a bit of heat and a dead fan is definitly something to fix pronto. It's unlikely, but sometimes things just come loose too. so it might be a good idea to reseat connections and see if that brings the a vidcard fan back to life.
