The other day, my girlfriends laptop for whatever reason, reset back to its default settings. It did not delete anything, because I was able to find all the old folders, it just basically removed any new folders, images and what not from the desktop. I went and looked at User info in the control panel and it looks like the computer for whatever reason put the old desktop as a back up and just put the original back up.
This is windows xp, any idea how to revert back to how it was?

well... besides the obvious cause which would be she logged in as someone else.... I would say that one or more files on her desktop became corrupted. When that happens, win2k and XP will create a new profile or use the default I forget which...
What you can do is simply drag all the files from her old desktop to the new profile she is using. To find out what profile you are using go to Start -> Run -> type in 'cmd' and it should come up with a prompt that says C:\Documents and Settings\someuser
