I want to buy a laptop for school. Basically it would just be for surfing the internet and programming on. But being able to game is a plus too.
I'd want something like 1.5Ghz+ and 512mb+. Any suggestions?

best buy. and get the 3 year warranty with it so in 2.5 years "something" will go wrong with it and you get a free upgrade.

And you can't touch a warranty like that!

I really like my IBM Thinkpad. It's a 1.4ghz with gig of ram. It's nice, small and incredibly reliable. I have no idea how much it cost though, I use it for work.

I have a Toshiba from BB with a nvidia 5600 Go mobile card. Just make sure you upgrade or get 1GB of ram and any 3K+ CPU and you'll be fine.
Emachines 64 bit AMD laptops are like rated better than some $3000 machine stwice their price and have ATI ummm9700?s in em

$1000 laptop vs $30,000 car.
I'd say you are the bigger traitor.
Thx for playing. I'm glad I struck a nerve.

I couldn't find anything about it on Cnet. I did find lots of useful information on notebookforums.com though.
Some things I found out about it:
4200 RPM HDD
XP Home
Only operates @ 800Mhz on battery power
The HDD and OS issues could be easily taken care of, but the 800Mhz is really turning me away. =\

Unless you are going to use your laptop like a desktop (plugged in the whole time) I really recommend getting one with either a Pentium M of mobile Athlon chip...they do wonders for battery life.
Another thing to look at is screen contrast, washing out, etc. Roommate has a fujitsu which looks really washed out, but other roomate's Sony looks amazing.
Widescreen is awsome, but thats just m2c.

After some research I think I want to build my own.
Barebone Asus A2K w/ 128mb Radeon 9700: $831
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=DM-Z80-CMB
+ Mobile Athlon 64 3400+: $249
+ 1GB Corsair DDR400: $161
+ Western Digital 80Gb 5400RPM: $138
Total: $1379
This doesn't have the widescreen. I looked at some notebooks at BestBuy and decided I didn't like the weird ratios. I need my 1280x1024.
Finding a 7200RPM laptop HDD is difficult, apparently, so I'll just deal with the 5400.
I could also swap in a 3700+ for $100 more. Still debating this one.
What do you guys think?

i've had numerous problems with mine, and gateway was not helpful at all in actually FIXING my problems.

Yes, thats why I'm leaning towards building my own now... didn't hear anything good about them. Plus the price of the one I was looking at went up to $1500.
