i'm interested in purchasing a laptop off of Ebay
its a toshiba satellite series.
but it has a docking type thing, i'm not really sure what its for.
is it just like an extended battery + ports? or is it required to run the laptop?
the laptop itself has a DVD rom, not the docking thing so i'm guessing without the docking thing the laptop can still run.
thanks in advance

Basically, the dock sits on your desk, and the laptop snaps into it, automatically hooking everything up.

Docking station just provides port replication(they are sometimes just called port replicators when they are small version) and usually a stand for the monitor to sit on. Sometimes there are additional drives that are not built into the laptop, but not always.
The big plus is that you can have a monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse, plus other gizmos and gadgets as you wish, all ready to use and you just pop the laptop in place in the docking station and it becomes a desktop basically! My work provided me with one at the office and one for the house back when I was on call 24/7.
Good to have usually!

we have a few laptops at work with docking stations. they allow you to work with things like a monitor, keyboard etc. but usually they are for networking but allowing portability if you need to take the computer with you
