If you want the size, but not a trendy iPod, try out the Creative Zen. I've had one for a couple years and have had 0 issues with it.

I have a Philips something I can't remember now. It's the 2gig one. My only gripe is that although cheap, it doesn't play wma files, Only mp3.

I have the new generation Sony Lyra, it was inexpensive and it plays well. Also it has an AM/FM radio and you can record onto it from the radio. Oh it has 512 storage which isn't much, but it comes with an extra slot to add more.

RCA Lyra just like I say in every thread that anyone asks Smile its small, portable, very easy to use. Doesn't have a shitload of storage but supports MMC and SD Cards for upgradeability.

RCA Lyra for sure. I bought a Sony uh.. something.. this time. Wish I had bought a Lyra instead. The Sony MP3 players are HORRIBLE. They can't play mp3s or .wav or .wmv files. They can only play their special format, which you need their software to encode your mp3s into. It's a pain in the f*****g ass and I hate it. On the plus side, the battery lasts longer, it sounds pretty good, and something about their proprietary format causes 0 load time (versus 1/10th of a second load time w/ Lyra).

The Lyra I got came with a firmware update to play wma which I thought was pretty cool =)

Find one that's free, or a good one that you can get a serial/crack for.

well the other problem is that i download a lot of audiobooks that i'd like to use it to listen to, but mostly they are in m4b format...

and the feature where you can bookmark audio files and come back later to the same spot seems awesome... can you only do that with an ipod?

There is a new Sony player that is coming out within the next couple months that plays mp3, wav and .wmv files. 1gb Flash Memory. It's about the size of a AA battery but on a full charge has a 18 hour battery life and a battery life of 3 hours on an emergency 3 minute charge that pwns. The retail cost will be about $199.00.

My iPod 40 gig Photo was the best $400 or $500 I've ever spent on anything music related besides instruments. If it got stolen or something happend to it, I would repeat the exact purchase in a heartbeat.

Very happy with the customer support also. A few weeks ago my ipod was playing funny, I called customer service, they sent me an empty box 2 days later, I dropped the ipod in the box, they picked it up the next day, a week later I got a brand new $500 ipod in the mail. No questions asked.

I suggest getting the Belkin FM transmitter and the upgraded $40 earbuds. I've never had a problem with static on my transmitter in 3+ months of use, and the earbuds kick ass, they block out 100% of outside noise, and basically have their own subwoofers in them.

The question I have for you is, do you know WHY iPods are trendy? Things don't often get trendy for no reason. The iPod has a level of versatility to it that other players don't have. Can you run software and transfer non music files between machines using a regular MP3 player? Your point about the audiobooks is actually one of the reasons I got it. I don't know how extensive the bookmark feature is (I don't even know if there is one) but I have this entire audio course on German I'm picking up and if it weren't for my iPod I would be relegated to only doing it on my computer.

The iPod is combination portable hard drive, PDA and music player. It has so much functionality to it most people don't even f*****g realize. I have the 4Gb mini and it's seriously the best piece of personal technology I've ever owned.

I don't know about most of the rest, but the Zens are a usb2.0 hdd as well as the mp3 player. For what I've seen looking around on a iPod, any of the extra stuff was all things I use my cellphone for. I know I come off as an iPod hater, because well... I kind of do. =)

Oh, that's fine, I wasn't really saying you had to like iPods no matter what, I was just pointing out to atarom that sometimes things are trendy for a reason. The iPod lit a fire under the personal music player industry's ass, whether or not you like it. It's not hard to imagine that new products will come out and already are out that will outdo it in many respects.

Yeah, one downside is, if you're going to be looking for stuff retail, don't expect to find any non-iPod accessories. They've got cool stuff to them, but it's just not something I can see myself using a lot for the added cost.

Big thing for me is being able to reach into my pocket and work the controls without seeing the player, is that even possible with an iPod? The touch-pad wheel controls is a cool concept, but it kind of annoys me.

Of course it is! It's no different than hitting a button on another player. The only mishap I have from time to time is accidentally cranking the volume all the way up while I flip to the next song, but that's pretty rare. Once you get used to it it's second nature.

My personal preference is to just use headphones with the song control on the wire tho. This isn't available for iPod unless you use the apple cord which adds another foot to your phones, which is a pain. The wheel isn't nearly as cumbersome as might seem, tho.

I had a Zen for 2 years. Now the headphone jack is all f****d-up and I can't hear anything right. There's nothing I can do other than buy a new one. Cheap piece of junk.

I've had mine for about 2 years now, it's been dropped multiple times, has a slight crack above the menu button, scratched casing, and a few screen nicks, but it still sounds fine. So yeah... cheap piece of junk.
