Just found out the sys admin for my company is quitting in two weeks. Since I seem to be the only other person here that even knows what a NIC is, I have been nominated to take over any duties related to the network. What am I getting into? Sad

Maybe. There's some people working here who havent gotten a raise in years. But I've been here 16 months and have gain an extra $3 since I started. They even gave me a dollar raise w/o telling me once. Surprised

How dependant is your company on what you do, if you get the job and they have no one who could replace you and its a critical thing then rape them for all the cash you can get by threatening to quit.,

Once he's gone I'll be the only person with computer repair skills here. I'm also their main programmer for a CNC point-to-point, which they depend on greatly. I've known I hold a trump card for a few months now, this just gives me another one. Wink

Go to you boss. Tell him that you really enjoy working there but the extra responsibility deserves commensurate pay. Then give him a b*****b.

Wow. Your company has low standards.

Reminds me of a person that now reports to me that used to have the title of "MIS Director". Funny thing was, his MIS department consisted of solely himself.

At any rate, seems you may be 1 step above Best Buy/CompUSA techs. Razz

What size company is it? Do they never hire new people? You might be taking over his responsibilities temporarily until they hire someone. Finding a sysadmin is not exactly difficult these days.

I think it's about a $7 million company. Has maybe 50 people. Before this guy started working here though all sys admin stuff was done by the president's brother, and only when he had the free time to do it.

Applying windows updates and showing people how to nagivate the menu's within Microsoft Word hardly qualifies as network admin in my humble opinion but someone has to do it. Thats not a dig against you by the way Smile just a general pet peeve. So what are you going to be doing specifically? Hardware maintenance you've mentioned anything relating to servers at all? Any Cisco/Nortel/Alcatel/ other router related stuff? I don't have a URL handy but I think you can go look up census statistics and see what the going rate for your type of work in your area pays, then if you're below that with the added responsibilities go to your boss with hard numbers, they like it when you show them numbers Laughing I think Confused mentioned a b******b, that might not hurt either..
