Audio out -> Audio in if worse comes to worse, provided Palladium doesn't enter the picture. Even if that happens eventually you can just do that, since it has to be sound waves at some point.

For Palladium to work MS would need the hardware manufacturers' cooperation. If Dell had to choose between MS and Linux, they're going with MS. Same for probably every manufacturer.

any sound card company that follows this might as well shoot itself in the foot
myself and at least 3 other people I know use an amp to get sound out of the computer and into some good speakers .. like hell i'd buy a sound card that wouldn't let me do this
if sound cards were to be "upgraded" to not allow this, and require speakers with a specific interface nobody would buy one .. especially in the realm of high quality sound cards where people are expecting to be able to have as much ability to line in / out as possible ..
not to mention that there are plenty of industry level setups and software when it comes to home theatres and speaker design that require the use of line in / line out to work
I can imagine a shitton more reasons not to do this .. but I think the point is clear .. any idiot over at microsoft should be able to tell that this is doing them way more harm than good ..
