My monitor is f****d - started sometime yesterday or the day before. I have turned the monitor off (overnight even) so that basic fix isn't working.
Basically my color is off, looks duller than usual, and there are bands of slightly darker shading across my screen of varying heights - from less than 1 line of text, to as large as 3 lines.
Any suggestions on what to do short of buying a new monitor? Please keep in mind that I am a complete novice when it comes to computer tech, so any advice please phrase it as you would to your grandfather.

Your monitor is dying, anything short of buying a new one wont help.
Happened to mine a few months ago.

when I drag the mouse down under my bookmarks, a gray line goes down with it lol
maybe its time to suck it up and get an entire new system - P3 800, 256 Ram, Geforce2 32 Meg Video card and an enormous 17" monitor - turned 4 years old in August (or maybe 3, dunno)

could be vid card too
hard to tell unless you have another monitor you can plug into, or another puter you can plug the monitor into

Yep, it's the moniter. You can perform like that for about 4 more months until it crackels and pops. Just happend to me too. More apt to do it in the summer for me.
