I have a really old motherboard, Abit KT7-Raid (or maybe KT7A-Raid, I need to check for sure). It's only got a 1.2 gig Athlon with a 100 Mhz FSB (although I'm pretty sure it would handle 133 MHz FSB if the cpu did). It only supports 133 MHz SDRAM (not ddr).
I'm not ready to spend $500 for a new mboard/CPU/memory, since it still basically does OK. But if I could find a cheap CPU on ebay, for like $20-40 or so that would boost performance 20-50% or something, I'd do it. The only thing the manual/BIOS says is I could go up to 1.4 gig Athlon at 133 Mhz, which would help some, and be cheap if there are any chips still kicking around. Are there any faster chips that have come out since then that would still be compatible? Someone suggested a 2.4 gig Athlon XP would work - it's still socket A. Does that sound plausible?

Don't skimp on tech bud.
You can get a good m/b in the $100 range and a cpu for about the same that's not blazeing but still prob. better than what you got.
No where near the $500 you mentioned.
Keep the ram.

Hmm. I'm not sure if modern motherboards can use old non-DDR SDRAM DIMMS. Might be worth it if they can and I didn't have to replace my memory, even if it was a little slower. I'll get a new system in 6-12 months or so; I just don't have a good excuse atm.

I'm in the same boat. My solution is just to either save for 4 months and throw down for a new mb and chip.
If you don't skimp on pariferals then all you have to do is throw down for the mb/chip every 2 1/2 years and a video card every 3.
I got 256 of good ram when it was obscenely cheap a while back.
My sound card was surround top of the line 5 years ago and I've yet to replace it.
