ESPN destroyed basketball in the United States. It has gone to absolute shit the past 20 years in the pursuit of the highlight clip. The emphasis on dunking, 1 on 1 post up games and flashy moves has killed fundamentals. Players can't shoot that well (and when they do it is 3 point shots, which should be eliminated) and passing is a lost art.
In any given season there are less than 5 teams that play old style with a fluid motion offense that is really entertaining to watch. Combine that with the deafening hip hop music blaring in the background and you have an inferior product.
Give me football and hockey - you can keep basketball.

ESPN trashed baseball, too. Homer highlights, that's all you get. And we know how players went about racking up more homers...
In fact, is there any sport ESPN excels in? Can't think of any. The networks and local channels seem to beat ESPN to shit in everything. They can't even do poker right.

I don't understand home run highlights, unless the ball reached the upper deck or just barely cleared the fence over a fielder's glove - something unusual. Otherwise, all you see is a player swinging the bat and the ball travelling in the air, hardly amazing or highlight worthy. An amazing catch in the field, a double steal or close play at the plate - now those are worthy of highlight reels.

/agree
home runs are the worst thing that happened to baseball imo.
I think they should move all fences back 25 feet. That would fix the game.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! I suppose you guys who don't like the current state of affairs in the NBA are season ticket holders for the WNBA, right? Or do you just like to b***h about stuff?
I think basketball currently suffers from something baseball is accused of suffering from all the time: Watering down of Talent. Lots more teams in the league means lots more guys get paid to play. This means that essentially there are guys playing today who wouldn't be playing in the '80s. It's not that guys can't shoot, it's that the % of guys who can shoot is less than it was.
And also, the mid-range jumpshot is a lost art, but it's lost for a reason. Not only does taking a 3-pointer mean your defender has farther to travel to get to you when he's out of position, but also, in order to score the same amount of points as a guy shooting 33% from the 3-point line, you have to shoot 50% as a jumpshooter, and some of those shots are less than 5 feet closer to the basket than a 3. In other words, you might as well take the 3. As to whether it needs to be done away with, that's a different topic. Personally, I like it. As Reggie Miller says, "It's a man's shot".
Finally, what you're missing out on by only watching ESPN's coverage of NBA basketball is that in the last 3 years or so, a LOT of very talented players have entered the league. The NBA will be experiencing a Magic/Bird-esque revitalization within the next 4 years, bet on it.

NBA is fine as it is. Sports evolve, nba is a great market and fun to watch. Classic old basketball is boring, the game is a lot more athetic now. Do you really think the old teams like boston could even come close to playing with the new style of play and teams? No way they would get ran right out of the gym.

Eindar, I agree with you that the 3 hurt basketball more than ESPN, I even said so above:
| Quote: | | 3 point shots, which should be eliminated |
And no I do not watch the WNBA, the women are worse than the men - they can't shoot for shit either and they have ZERO above the rim game. Dunks are exciting to watch as part of a basketball game, as are the above the rim layups and overall athleticism of the men's game. My problem (and most other's I would assume) is with the 1 on 1 post up style of play that dominates the league now, and the proliferation of the 3 point shot and its impact.

There are times when I'd like to see the 3 removed, so that players aren't always looking for the line when they shoot, but it's also a shot that's exciting to watch, especially when the team is down 2 and has a choice of going for the higher percentage bucket to tie the game or risk the 3 to take the lead, with failure meaning the other team can put them down 4-5 with their next possession.
You could move the line back further, but I think you have to be very careful with that, because you taint old records. For instance, Reggie's 3 pointers made mark is going to be hard enough to break as-is. If you move the line back a couple feet, it would be nearly impossible. The NBDL is doing something where 3s only count as 3s for the last 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarter, which seems like it would fix most of the problems, but is a little gimmicky for me.
In the end, I think you just have to accept it for what it is, and live with the fact that the 3-pointer will be around for a long time.
