yeah, I read that this morning too.

I remember seeing the story on that guy when he decided. He was one hell of a safety for the Cards. Young, and married also. Sad

Sad to hear it. Sad I remember reading about him turning down his contract with the Card's to go to the Army at 9/11.

he shouldnt have gotten the coverage he did. to single somebody out just because they played in the NFL is wrong. if they are going to give this kind of coverage to one man they need to do it for all the men and women who have died. i salute him for his sacrifice and his patriotism but all this is unnecessary attention. i would rather hear about the man who didnt need a tragic event like 9/11 to join the military and his valiant acts in combat.

The reason why it was a story is because he turned down $3million to play football for a living.

You, as well as I when I joined, and most everyone else in the military doesn't do it exactly to defend a country.

We're economically not in the best shape, probably can't pay for college on our own, so we join up.

That's the dif. But I hear what you're saying. He is really just one more Ranger.

I joined mainly because of the tradition of my family in the military. Every male in my family has served. Even if only for two years. I knew even as a young child I would join up. I did ten active years and I'm on my seventh as a reservist. Three to five more and I'm retired. hehe. Smile

Back to the topic. He was a ballplayer and with it came noteriety. Therefor by turning down a $3 million + contract to join the Army and serve his country post 9/11 made him popular. Lots of little stories about him. Sure it would be nice to see more about the average Joe. But usually the only time you will hear of that average Joe is if he is a posthumous medal of honor winner. do not put me in that category. i personally am wealthy thanks to a trust fund left to me by my grandfather. i can afford college. i did it because i love this country and did join it to defend this country. That and ive been military my whole life. i know not everybody is in my situation but i can go around the office and at a minimum 3/4 of the folks i work with love this country and joined to help defend it.

The non-glorified truth is that most of those kids over there are fighting someone else's war because they are (95% of the time) too stupid and need $ for college.

That's really the only reason he got notariety. Because his hand wasn't forced. He had the world by the shorties and still went.

Which d*****t, who's never been in the military, will be the first to try and deny that?

At first I was skeptical of how the story would be run but so far it has been done in taste. You gotta admit, the kid gave up a lot on principle and that is a good thing. I don't expect the taste and class that has been shown today to last through the night though...Expect some stupid ass b******t from the NYT or Washington Post in the morning.

I thought the same thing when I first saw the coverage, but after hearing the story I think he merits some coverage. He had every reason in the world to stay in the US and live the high life, but instead he gives it all up to put himself in harms way. 7 digit salary, new wife, promising NFL career...not many people would leave all of that to go get shot in Afghanistan. Not to diminish anyone else that is/was in the military, but this guy was pretty special.
