Getting some spam
Blocked out mail by key phrases and such already.
Now, they are arriving as background pictures of the text instead of text, and I don't know how to filter those.
How do I?
Thanks.

Dunno how useful this will be to you, but it's a good site to educate yourself and others 'bout what you can do about spam: http://www.cauce.org/

Even Gmail seems to have a hard time filtering out this specific type of spam, in which the text portion of the email just contains random words (e.g. something like "In 1955, President smells like blue in the house grappled nickel flower..." etc.), while the HTML portion of the email contains a big image of an email that appears to come from ebay. If you have an email client that defaults to showing the HTML version, you only ever see the picture. As for how to filter it when the content is completely random... I don't know! I think Gmail must use the % of people who rate something as spam as a factor in marking it as spam. So if 95% of people who've opened that email think it's a spam, it's probably safe to assume that it's spam, and they just put it in your spam bucket. That's one advantage of using a centralized service for your email. Ability to mark specific IP ranges as spammers is another.
You could look around for an email client that doesn't show the HTML version of emails by default, not sure if Thunderbird does that or not, and that would at least keep you from seeing the actual spam content. I don't know if you can write filters based on IP within a mail client, but if so you can save yourself a lot of spam by blocking all of Asia, Europe and Africa from emailing you, assuming you never intend to get an email from there. I used to run a mail server, and when I blocked the 210. and 211. IP ranges, our spam level was slashed by half.
