less knee impact mainly and supposedly they give you a bit more range of motion than normal running which develops the muscles a bit more

Strength training can improve running.

I don't really think it will. I hit the elliptical and while it helped my endurance quite a bit it never did really help me when I either flat out ran or used the treadmill for a change of pace..

Distance running is improved by distance. Once a certain level of cardio exercise is reached the only way to improve your running is through repetition of the specific movement. I really think long distance running is not something the human body was designed for, I think people who do it for any reason other than challenge or love of it are fools.
Strength training is where you can increase your speed. If you want specifics you can start reading some Poliquin. Some decent free info on his site that will get you started. I'm sure there are better books on running specifically though.
I'm sorry to have to say I doubt you can do 6miles in 30mins. I just don't see any person on Realpoor doing it. If the number is accurate then I say the machine is wrong. Go run on a highschool track if you want to find out for sure. I don't even know of anyone who can claim that time who's lived in the same town as me. It's just absurd to believe a number like that would be posted by someone who doesn't even know how to train for running. It's like someone asking if a Pec Deck will improve their bench, then following it up with btw I bench 455.

I believe Nemo. When using any type of cardio vascular maching in doors your times will increase dramatically than running outside. First, no wind resistance. Second, Cleaner air. Third, No mental factor such as ( omg, ive only gone 2 laps and i feel dead ). I personally can run 3, 7 minute miles , nonstop on the treadmill and barely break a sweat. Get me outside and im dead by the time i finish 2 miles.
Huge differences in running indoors and outdoors.

thanks for the info....btw not everyone on rp is a fat overweight scot or canadian. also the bench press is a bad compairson....if I was running 6 miles normal and then started using the machine I can understand the point but if I am only running roughly 3 miles and then started using the machine its a valid question. If I can do 6 miles on the machine would it increase my outside running.

If you have quick access to pools, take Paco's advice. I have talked to a few runners who suggest running in the 3ft pool area.
One guys words were, "Yeah, you'll look dumb doing it but after two weeks of pool running, concrete will feel easier than it ever has."

Also factor in uneven terrain, going up and down grades, etc.
