I know some of you dont want to mod your xbox because of your fear of god and or microsoft.
so here is a DVD player that plays DVDs and also can pull files through the network and USB and other stuff. does HD too.
does DIVX which is what most .avi movies are in these days

I have a Neuston "Maestro" that does all of that.
It's pretty nice.

I have an old laptop which hides behind the TV with a wireless nic. I use it's video out to display the movies on my TV. Although, I will admit I don't have a fancy HDTV so screen res isn't an issue.
