Alright. I have 2 sticks of pc2700 ram, 512mb. With either stick installed in any of the 3 slots, the system registers 512mb of ram. With 2 sticks installed in slots 1 and 2, the system will not boot up. With 2 sticks installed in slots 1 and 3, the system registers 256mb of RAM.
It's an asus a7v333 with the latest bios. It supports 1gb per slot.
what. the crap. I know the ram is good.

bad ram slots?
try updating the motherboards bios. if that fails, try to get an RMA and replace the mobo

You left out too many details.
What kind of ram exactly? ECC or non? matched? same brand? what?

he says he knwos the ram is good, therefore, those details aren't really necessary. i also assumed that since he said the ram was good, he had used it in the motherboard previously.

well grasshoppa, as you play with AW, you are no jedi yet
sure, it can work in other machines, but his mobo might not support it
speaking from recent experience, it would appear that if it's only seeing 512k, and other f****d up shit, it sounds like it's not very compatible with his mobo
need more information, otherwise, good luck figuring it out

Non-ecc, Crucial.
Looking closer at the ram though.... I notice 1 has chips on both sides, and 1 has chips on just one side. Could this be the problem?

that depends on the ram type. if it's ddr, you'd put it in slots 1 and 3, or 2 and 4 (as you look down at the slots... MOBOs are labled abcd sometimes)

Stuff I'd try:
- download Sisoft Sandra. It should tell you exactly what memory chips you have, how many banks it is, what the timing is, etc. Try running it with one chip installed at a time, and both, and see if the values change.
e.g. I have old SDRAM, but for mine it says:
| Quote: | Memory Module 1: PRINCETON 256MB 16x(16Mx8) SDRAM PC133U-222-542(CL3 up to 143MHz)(CL2 up to 133MHz)
Memory Module 2: 2000000 256MB 16x(16Mx8) SDRAM PC133U-222-542(CL3 up to 143MHz)(CL2 up to 133MHz)
Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks
Bank 0 128MB SDRAM 2-3-2-0CL
Bank 1 128MB SDRAM 2-3-2-0CL
Bank 3 128MB SDRAM 2-3-2-0CL
Bank 4 128MB SDRAM 2-3-2-0CL
Bank Interleave 4-way
Speed 1x 133MHz (133MHz data rate)
Multiplier 4/3x
Width 64-bit |
- try messing with stuff like "memory drive strength" in the BIOS, or maybe even memory timing although I'd try to avoid that.

It's not just a problem with this ram though. When I first built this system about 2 years ago I had some generic 512mb ddr in it. After about 6 months I noticed it had started to only recognize as 256. So I replaced the ram with a new stick of Crucial ram. With both in it would still only recognize 256. With just the criucial it's 512.

Im betting it is a parity problem.
| Quote: | | DDR333 will support A7V333-X, but the maximum support is up to 4 banks only. This means you can use 3 single-sided DDR 333 memory modules or 2 double-sided DDR 333 emory modules else 2 single-sided and 1 double-sided DDR333 memory module on A7V333-X. |
I am not 100% positive but in order to use the single sided chip you would have to have another single sided chip along with it.
Which one is the new chip? The single side or two side?
I had this problem before but it was becuse I had 2 single sided chips and had to install them in 1 and 3 instead of 1 and 2.

I don't even remember which one the new one is. =\
Technically neither is "new". The story is, in December I was putting together a computer for my mom for christmas. I was going to put that original generic 512 in it that I thought was faulty, since she'd be happy with just 64mb. I couldn't find that one for awhile, so I ordered a new stick of 512 from crucial, and gave her one of my other crucials for the time being. Well I finally found the generic stick and replaced them last weekend. It shows up as 512 on her computer, but still has 256 on mine. Godamnit. I think next time I goto see her I'll bring alone an old SDRAM stick and take all my DDR back and see if I can get this working properly. (her mobo supports both).
