I just installed SWG and I updated my drivers amd DirectX 9 just in case, it's crashing literally 5 steps after I log in. It strikes me as a hardware/software issue on my side and not a game issue. What are some hotspots I should be on the lookout for?

This may seem obvious but make sure you do a "fullscan" option at the patcher.
Also, your video size. 1024 x 768 is always a safe setting. I guess I'd make sure your pc settings were at that.

I'll do both of those, I think my video setting was at about that.. After mucking around with it some more I found a few things...
1) it ONLY crashes in cities. Out in the wild I could run around for hours, then walk into a city and BLAM
2) it doesn't necessarily crash when executing several commands at once, sometimes I would just be looking somewhere or standing there and it would crash
3) I figured I would put it on my second computer, it works perfectly there crashwise but has a little more video lag and my toon's face is all black like it failed to draw my tatoos
My computers' stats :
main : P4 2.1 GHz 512Mb ATI Radeon 7800 running DirectX 9.0b
complement : P4 1.5GHz 512Mb ATI Radeon 7200 DirectX 9.0a (whatever SWG came with)
I have a strange feeling it's related to my DirectX or video driver. I'm going to try mucking around with it again, just wondering if anyone with a comparable machine has had any issues like it. As a closing thought I would just like to add that I think it's stupid as hell that a machine require a 2GHz or greater processor to run *well*. My second machine suffers considerably under the load, which irks me to no end. Even EQ I can run on my third machine which is an old p2 266 128 at the cost of some clip pane in Luclin zones and subsequest expansions but this new powerhog is just .... ugh. There was a word for this in the old codex... WOMBAT

Yea, feels like a video thing..
make sure all your drivers are updated (How many times ya heard that?)
check the settings as I mentioned, although I doubt that is the problem for now.
Do that fullscan thing, twice even. About two weeks ago they had problems with crashing similar to yours, and the fix was to do a fullscan.
Gluck.
