I need some help please. Before I explain the problem, I am basically a "newbie" when it comes to anything tech related, pretend you are explaining the problem to your 75 year old grandfather and I might understand what you are talking about.

Basically my computer is lagged to shit. The internet is slow, even moving the cursor across the screen to play Freecell is all jumpy - like how you used to move in EQ when lag was really bad. I ran disc defrag tonight and disc cleanup, neither helped. The computer isn't that old, PIII 800. I reformatted the HD about a year ago with a friend's help, so that's fairly recent and I dont have many excess programs on it.

Any ideas?

Hmmm

Get Ad-Aware and/or SpyBot Search&Destroy and give em a run; I know that a lot of spyware programs running at the same time can hog down memory and other various resources..

A year ago's worth of reforming is a long time to accumilate crap, I'd say go ahead and do it again.

I dont know much ( as in anything ) about memory leaks or anything like that, so that's the best I can give

Virus or something like that is probably the best bet. You shouldn't have problems moving the cursor no matter how fragmented your disk is. What OS are you running, XP?

If you are, you can do ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager and click on the performance or processes tabs to see what's eating up your cpu.

Also, are you hooked up to the net 24/7 (i.e. DSL or cable)?
Do you have a file shareing program active such as Kazaa?
Do you have anything in your active program manager tab that might be active (lower right icons next to the clock on the windows bar)? list them all plz.

If you have kazaa and it's on people could be downloading from you slowing you down, make sure it's shut off from the icon bar.

If you are on dsl/cable someone may have put a zombie bot on your system, run the link above.

You may have a virus or file managment prog. running in the background, check your systray (icons in the lower right).

I agree Kazaa is the devil, but I know I couldn't survive without some means to steal music Sad

i dont think the amount of stuff on your hard drive matters much. i have 87.4 gigs on mine and its not slow. but sometimes i get that one process thats only maybe a meg or so in size but for some reason insist it uses 100% of processor resources. just check whats running with you task manager and computer management if you are running ntfs
