My friend at school today was talking about this program he found that allows you to see what other people are saying to other people via Instant Message. Is he lying? If not, Anyone know what it is? If so, where can I get? How do I work it? Give me the works please.

hobbet,
i'm sure there is a program like that, all it'd require is simple packet sniffing i believe. the issue is, it's really detectable if the person is running like a firewall that will report this kinda activity to them.

Maybe it's a trojan he's using to spy?

There are such programs.... And no, your firewall doesn't pick it up. Packet sniffers put a network card into promiscuous mode. It doesnt transmit shit, it just reads packets its not supposed to.. Like showeq. You can search your network for NICs in promiscuous mode, but that doesn't mean they are doing anything malicious.
You also have Man in the middle attacks, where your computer (x) thinks its talking to server (z) but, in fact, its really relaying all its traffic through hacker (y) who traps all the info he wants and passes the legit traffic to server (z) and computer (x) is none the wiser...
However, in all likelyhood, whats probably happening is the person installs a trojan onto someone's computer that monitors everything they are doing remotely.

I could be wrong, but i thought they used encryption? With encryption sniffing does jack shit for you (unless you hack/crack it).

i was always under the impression that packetsniffers were really easy to pick up on, but *shrug*
also, the only time IM messages are encrypted is like, when you set it up to encrypt hte messages..
in AIM you have to download an encryption add-on and both parties need to have it. ICQ has it built in i think, and i dunno about MSN and Y!

None of that shit is encrypted. ICQ maybe, but no one uses it except carina_2392_393 (ICQ #92384023984208) who wants you to watch her daddy f**k her tight virgin russian ass on her webcam.

For a straight packet sniffing scenario this would be a problem. AIM doesnt use encryption by default, but it is available...
For a MitM attack, even if the traffic is SSL encrypted, you still get the data clear text because the hacker]e exchanges certs with the hacker, who sees everything in cleartext as it passes through his machine, and then re-encrypts for transmission to the original intended recipient... automatically.
Yeah rootus, packetsniffers are easy to find... Most people don't look for them tho, and you have no idea what they are sniffing for.
