I had a splitter hooked up between my TV and Modem. Seemed to work fine until recently the net would only work intermitently and very slow. I removed the splitter and it's as good as new.
Do I need a special splitter for everything to work properly? If so, which kind?

You need one rated for higher frequency. I believe they go up to the 2GHz range.

I had problems with my cable lines and splitters. The cable company (adelphia) came out, gave us a brand new 8 port splitter, a 2 port splitter for the modem/TV, and replaced like 50 feet of cable for no charge at all. I was happy.
