I've got the little Pentax Optio S4 - I like that it's so small I always have it with me, and it takes good pics.

I was told this one sucks because the large screen cannot be turned off and it eats up a lot of battery life.

I have a Kodak CX6330, it does video with sound, takes 3.1 megapixel picts, and barely cost me $200.
Worked for me
I would like to check into a 35mm model, but f**k if I take enough pictures to give a shit about it. mine suits me.

I'd love one of the new canon digital SLRs if I had that kind of money and the time to use it meaningfully.

i was looking at this one before. Seems to take good pics , is very small and is the cheapist of the bunch.
what is the differance between the S4 and the S4i ?

The Optio S sucks. Get the Casio Exilim EX-Z40 4MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom since it ironically takes better pictures than the Optio S even though it has a Pentax lens as well. The Casio also has a huge LCD screen and is generally rated much better from the Digi Photo mags. $300-400
If you don't mind a larger camera. The Olympus C765 is a great 4mp camera that has a 10x optical zoom. Definitely a Best Buy candidate and one of the better new affordable super zooms. $400
If you want to get serious, the Nikon D70 SLR is the way to go for value and and true professional capabilities. $999 Body Only.
If you buy online, make sure you avoid the Camera Stores from Brooklyn , NY like J & R and B & H since they are notorious for bait & switch tactics. They will do shit like sell you the camera but won't include the acessories even though it's supposed to be included or force you to buy a warranty. The only east coast camera store thats seems to be honest is Beach Camera.

There's not a huge difference between the S4 and S4i. Mainly a bigger lcd screen on the back, some minor case changes, and adding a quick reset button to navigate the config menus faster.
Its main drawbacks compared to larger equivalent cameras seems to be a little softness in the focus at the corners, and a little graininess in very low light conditions.

The brand/model of digi camera you buy depends on what kind of use you have for it. I shoot horse sports professionally so I have some nice Canons with really fast shutter response. I cant have lag time on the shutter at all. But they cost alot, weigh a ton but are built for the abuse a pro will put on them.
I'd say go with a zoom, ability to have manual settings as well as automatic. If you intend to use it alot get one a bit more expensive than the cheapest so that you dont wear it out after a few thousand shots.
If you already have canon or nikon fit lenses you could buy one of their high end consumer models so that you can keep using those lenses. If you want a little point and shoot, there are some nice ones out on the market made by nikon, canon, mamiya etc.
Most point and shoots have pretty laggy shutters, so freezing action is really tough.

I use Canon D60 with sigma 70-210 f2.8 and canon 28-135 IS lenses... Image quality is excellent and I have shot a little freelance stuff for the local newspaper... 6 million pixel CMOS allows enlargements up to 11x14 at least as good quality as prints from film. Only thing i didnt like was the old lines of flashes dont work except on manual TTL settings...
anyone wanna buy my old stuff? got an EOS elan2e with speedlite 540ez and sigma 28-105 lens... also has the battery pack BP 50 that has an additional shutter release allowing user to shoot horiz. shots without reaching around camera...
let me know, am moving to the Houston area this weekend so, gimme a tell or PM me

the great thing about digital cameras is that no matter how much you spend on one the picture quality still isnt as good as the disposible camera you buy at cvs for 5 bucks.

obviously , you choose not to use them...
I can take any disposable camera, shoot under perfect lighting conditions and print at 5x7 and see noticable granularity, I can put it under a microscope and see that this is due to clumping of the dyes that are coupled with the light sensitive silver halide crystals found in film and print paper.... especially with disposable cameras, which use 400 or 800iso film.
take the same shot with a 3mp or higher camera, print at 5x7 with the best printer around, in my opinion the fuji pictography 3000 or 4000, and you will see that you will have to magnify the digital print up to 2x more than the film print to notice the same granularity...
now you can argue that you will get s****y prints when you use jpeg compression or use a crappy printer, but this is where your first arguement is flawed... you stated that no matter how much you spend, you wont beat film (even s****y film in disp. cameras) with digital....
I win at RP

Use this to get a side-by-side feature comparison for all four:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp
The Powershot line is pretty good. I remember the A70 was one of their top sellers a while back.
re: T1 batter life. It takes about 100 shots before you have to change batteries. For comparison, the A80 takes around 300 shots.

i own a coolpix 4300
takes really nice pictures
really - you need to decide what you want most out of a camera
rotating screen?
smaller footprint?
digital/optical zooms?
how many Megapixels do you really need?
price point?
answer these questions for yourself and it will steer you where you need to go
