BALTIMORE A "ballistic fingerprinting" law in Maryland has apparently misfired.
State police want to kill it, and use the money elsewhere.
For almost five years, it's been the law in Maryland that handguns must be test-fired before they can be sold. The spent shell casing is sent to police.
But a state police report says such "fingerprinting" has not helped a single criminal investigation. The superintendent of Maryland State Police says, "The system really is not doing anything."
Colonel Thomas Hutchins notes that guns found at crime scenes "may not necessarily be the ones sold in Maryland, so there's nothing to compare it to anyway."
He thinks the money -- two and a-half (m) million dollars so far -- would be better spent on proven crime-fighting techniques.

It's a good idea, but serious gun guys can change the fingerprint of a gun anyway. There are better solutions. Unfortunately, I know nothing of guns so I can't provide any.

Most crimes committed with guns are not committed by the original gun owner, minus crimes of passion. So it doesn't matter if they are printed really, because most of the ones used won't have prints.
