why do we treat these two crimes so drastically different ? the person who attempted murder and the person that committed murder are equally dangerous to our society. They both had the same intent , the only difference often is the quality/speed of medical care they received or original health of the individual.
*example* if two car jackers shoot their victims in the chest but one crime is committed across the street from a hospital where the victim is saved and the other dies at the scene. Why does one do 10 years and the other life ? They both are equally dangerous to society .

Because attempted murder usually isn't attempted murder, it's a way of upgrading something else (like shooting in the general direction of someone who's chasing you in an attempt to discourage them) to a more serious charge.
