It's not GH3, but it sure is fun!

by Odus

This will be my last article in the public section for a while as my new ones will be directed at premium members.  This is not strictly a "GH3/Rock Band" alternative, though it is still music based fun and works very well with many genres of music.  The game was released under "Steam" (PC only atm) for $9.99, a bargain for the fun i had myself in the first 30 minutes.  Key features:

- Import any music file on your HDD, USB stick or CD drive
- "Ride your music".  The game adjusts to the tempo of your song
- World  Scoreboards via Steam for any song
- The Orange Box Original Soundtrack included
- Combine this with LSD and you will have a mind blowing experience

System requirements:

- Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz processor
- 512 MB RAM
- DirectX 9.0 or higher
- Windows XP/Vista
- DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
- 32 MB DirectX 9.0 compatible Graphics card. (support for Pixel Shader 3.0 recommended)
= Copious amounts of psychoactive drugs to make the visuals blow your mind (joke lol)

The Game:

Ok, as i said this is not a GH3 alternative.  It is a music based game of "hit X, avoid Y" or different things on several game modes.  The main principle of competing online is to use "Ironmode", its like playing very hard on GH3.

Screenshot explaining the gameplay - http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6064/audiosurfzf8.jpg

You begin by selecting your "ship".  The ships have different properties i.e. some are regular, others can hold blocks or use a special ability, it isn't in depth but it gives you a variation.  Next you choose your difficulty, there are 3 settings i.e. Easy, Medium & Hard.  Now you have the option to turn "Ironmode" on and off.  Ironmode makes the game alot more difficult and the game will play like Tetris, fill up too many blocks and its game over.

You can load any song and it will create the level based on the tracks tempo.  If it starts off slow, the game will move slowly, as the tempo increases the game will speed up.  It works well to simulate music, as a slow track is building up you will be moving uphill, then i.e. on happy hardcore tracks where it moves to a very loud and high BPM, it will suddenly plunge downwards like a rollercoaster.  Everything will be explained in the video's below.  You can either buy & download it via Steam if you already have an account, or download the stanadlone torrent file which will install it without the use of Steam.

Just a few video's to show you of what the game is about.

Torrent instructions:

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4034480/Audiosurf-DETONATiON (main installation)
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4059069/Audiosurf.Update.1-DETONATiON (update to allow you to submit and view hi-scores, works fine as of 15/5/08)

Installation instructions:

1.  If you are new to torrents, download Azureus, a client to allow you to download torrents.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ - its free, follow installation instructions, very simple.

2.  Download the torrent via the torrent files listed above.  Once they download, go into Azureus and "open" the torrent file to begin the download.  It may take several hours since it is Peer-2-Peer and alot get the file then stop seeding (uploading), which means it will take longer to download.

3.  It will be packed as a WinRar file, so if you havent already download the following to extract them.

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm - also free

4.  Open the first file in your download folder with WinRar, it should be called "asrym-dtn".  Extract this file to wherever you like, desktop is easiest.

5.  Now you need to "mount" the file which means creating a virtual drive to trick the computer into thinking you just entered a CD which will load the install process.  To do this download the following program called "Daemon Tools".

http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5 - Again its free and something you will use alot if you download torrents.  You "can" use any virtual drive program you like, but i used this to get it installed.

6.  Now when it is installed right-click on daemon tools in your running programs in the bottom-right then go to "Virtual CD/DVD-Rom" - "Device 0" (or whichever is listed) - then "Mount Image".  If your extracted file is not listed there, look at the bottom of the window and change the file type to "all files" and then mount the image (this will only happen if you have VLC media player or another program assuming its a media file).

7.  It should auto-start the installer, if it doesnt, go to My computer - then to the Virtual drive and double click to start the installation process.

8.  Enjoy!

*** Please post in the comments page if you need assistance with the torrent ***

This may sound complicated, but after the first few times you use torrents to download cracked games and applications, it will be second nature to you.  Even if you arent that interested in the game i recommend you learn how to use torrents, its something you will probably use sometime in the future.

Overall i highly recommend this game and its the first thing to tear me away from GTA IV in weeks.  Its a great game just to sit back and listen to your favourite music and with the hi-scores you can aim to be the best at your favourite song.
