Do not post contact info for YOUR own benefit

by Odus

*** Reposted as a Reminder ***

Well this is my first article, it is primarily aimed at new members, although some old members still dont fully comprehend the seriousness of this.  This may seem like a really obvious topic, yet i have only been moderating less than 2 days now and i have lost count of how many people who disregard the rules here and post every form of indentity they have.

Ok, now i will give you a few reasons why you SHOULDNT post any form of contact info outside the PM system:

  • Spam-bots search the web picking up e-mail addresses and begin flooding you with anything from nigerian bank investors to porn.  Not only this, they may also e-mail you a link to a website containing a Keylogger.  It can be someting that seems innocent ending in .jpeg, but there is a way round this for hackers to implant a keylogger on your machine just from viewing a picture.  Now you have a keylogger, they have access to your bank account details, online game passwords, your e-mail account, the list goes on.  Piece it together and they can rob you blind of everything you own.
  • Your game account can get banned.  Here is an extract of Runescapes'  terms of service:

I have seen an account for sale on Ebay, what should I do?

Please rest assured that members of Jagex staff check all known auction sites on a daily basis to ensure that no RuneScape accounts are sold via online auctioning web sites.

It should be remembered that all accounts (and items) remain the property of Jagex at all times, and we will not hesitate to remove such items from the game if we have evidence that rule breaking has taken place.

To keep RuneScape enjoyable for everyone please observe and follow this rule. We will not tolerate disruptive players, and if you break our rules your account is likely to be banned. Members who are banned for breaking our rules are not entitled to any sort of refund.

What this means is Jagex staff will no doubt be watching this website (Big /wave to Jagex!) and if they see a character name or any assosciated info they can monitor the IP of where the account is being played from.  If they see it is suddenly changed from UK to Sweden, they have the power to freeze your account for investigation.  This extends to most major MMO's, so dont think because you play WoW, Guild Wars or Lotro you are safe.  You should also note that posting WoW armory profiles is a form of contact info and can be tracked by Blizzard.  You can read the rest of the RoC here:

  • It WILL get you banned from this website.  We have a fully fuctioning Private Messaging system where you can discuss contact information and any other personal info about the accounts.  This system is here for YOUR benefit.  If you post a trade with an e-mail address, a scammer just needs to add you on MSN/AIM, you will have no proof you were scammed by a member and this person will continue to play/trade your account round while you get left looking stupid.  If you post at the end of the trade "PM me for more info", the person will be forced into sending you a message, therefore exposing him so he may be banned in the event of a scam.

Now you can see why we dont want you posting contact info outside the PM system.  It is here to protect you, and if you cant abide by that, then you will be hunted down and have your account banned.

Having said that, happy trading.
