5 Tips to Keep Your Xbox 360 Cool
![]()
One of the biggest problems that owners of Xbox 360 face with is overheating of their beloved console. Red ring of death caused by too much heat in your Xbox unfortunately could become permanent damage to your system if it keeps repeating.
One of the biggest differences between the Xbox 360 and regular gaming desktop computers is that the Xbox console doesn’t have as efficient cooling system as PC. Heat, therefore, becomes enemy number one. It’s been produced relatively quickly, especially when games are being played for hours.
This article will provide you some basic tips on how to keep your Xbox cool and how to prolong the life of your console.
Tip 1 – Keep your Xbox well ventilated
While many Xbox owners like to place their console in a display cabinet, that’s not the healthiest choice for your Xbox. Lack of air flow causes overheating, so you should use Xbox in area that is well ventilated or cooled artificially by air conditioner or a fan pointed to blow directly at your console.
Tip 2 – Keep your Xbox clean and dust-free
Clean your Xbox from time to time because dust could obstruct normal air flow and cause overheating. Use a soft towel and start wiping away all dust on the exterior of your Xbox 360. That includes wiping away the vents, while you additionally could clean underneath the hard drive, all the power sockets and memory card slots. Opening the Xbox case is not recommended, unless you’re an expert, because you could lose your warranty. You should use canned air to clean interior of your Xbox.
Tip 3 – Don’t expose your Xbox to direct sunlight and heat
Make sure that your Xbox 360 is stored safely away from direct sunlight. It could not only warp the plastic, but also it could permanently damage your system. Also, you should avoid using your Xbox in a hot room, because console in warm environment would overheat faster causing freezes and red rings of death.
Tip 4 – Limit your gaming hours
One of the most important tips is that you should limit your gaming hours. While Xbox Live arcade games don’t cause too much trouble, high definition 3D games place a heavy demand on the system causing an overheating. It’s ideal to take small breaks (half an hour) during the gameplay to avoid potential overheating and damages. Definitely sounds hard for one gamer to pause the favorite game every hour or hour and a half, but these breaks could prevent worse things that could happen to Xbox due to overheating.
Tip 5 – Lift Xbox’s power brick off the floor
One useful trick that many Xbox users do is lifting Xbox power brick off the floor. Why, you may ask. Apparently what's causing the overheating and crashes of the Xbox 360, isn't the console itself, but rather that monstrous power supply. Increasing the airflow around it, would do the trick. You should simply get that power brick up off the floor, and stick it on an open box. It would emanate heat more efficiently preventing crashes induced by overheating.
