uncapping BW isnt against any law that i'm aware of. comcast may try to sue you or just cancel you, but you cant go to jail for it

That'd be like getting put in jail for unlocking disabled features on motherboards ( Hi Asus, ABIT doing it with Intel's PAT on i865 chipsets).
You can generally get better, look for an option of "Business Class" service. Cable has it nowadays its not so hot tho, generally instead of the s****y 256Kb upload (mind you, 256/8 to get KiloBytes(KB), you can get it doubled to 512Kb, as well as your download increased. Its pretty expensive and really not worth it as its only a difference of 20KB up per sec to 40KB up per sec, they both suck.
If you have access to DSL tho, the business class DSL can get pretty fast uploads, close to T1 class speeds for not to bad of a price (not T1 quickness or uptime however).

personally i see it more like going to a self serve fountain soda place and cutting a hole in the bottom of your cup and letting it run into a jug you have.

well as a Tier 3 provider of Cable internet.. I will say, no. you can not uncap it. It's limited in the CMTS (router) So no hacking of the cable modem will work. However if you could get into the CMTS you could fix it, however I suspect that if you had that knowledge, then you would not be asking this question.

best here is like 865 down and 765 up from speakeasy for $79/month. 256 more up. or 32K/sec up. that's the speed I'd like but a LOT more / month

comcast will just shut you down and you'll never be able to use their service again if you remove the cap on your modem. There is not a federal law though relating to hogging bandwidth.

By the way TechTV is talking, pretty soon most towns will have WiFi towers every few blocks...and it's free highspeed.

Is that the thing that higher-class hotels have, where anyone in the hotel's 'area' gets a wireless DSL-like connection?
